Under the general guidance of the communications section, the consultant will be responsible for writing human interest stories and capturing high-resolution photos with captions.

The stories and photographs, which will give a human face to donor proposals and reports, will focus on individual beneficiaries of UNICEF-supported programmes in Libya. The material will be used in donor reports and on the UNICEF website. Under the general guidance of the Communication Officer, this role is responsible for Produce and finalizing (12) human interest stories in Arabic and English with accompanying photos (four to six for each story) which highlight:

1- The issues affecting children in Libya the areas of Child Survival and Development, WASH, Child Protection, and Education. 2- The actions taken by UNICEF and partners under the various programme areas to deliver results for children 3- The impact of the support and the challenges that remain. 4- The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on women and children in Libya. To meet this requirement, the UNICEF Libya Communication section would like to engage the services of a professional writer to document UNICEF’s work following UNICEF publications and stylebook guidelines.

How can you make a difference?

• Review the Country Programme Document, Situation Analysis Report, UNICEF regional and Global Communication Strategy, and available project proposals and reports. • Liaise with the communications team to identify suitable subjects for coverage. The communications team will identify the relevant UNICEF programme staff and implementing partners on the ground to assist the writer as required to develop HIS with accompanying photographs.

• Travel within the country to collect information, conduct interviews and perform related tasks for the purpose of producing human interest or other stories and/or documenting UNICEF-supported activities, donor visits and other events related to UNICEF work. • Capture appropriate high-resolution photographs for each of the human-interest stories to be published in donor reports, proposals, programme documents, social media, UNICEF websites, power point presentations, social media packages and exhibition kits. • Teachers, parents, and others impacted by the programme may be interviewed to provide perspective, background or complementary information. However, the story should as far as possible be told from each child’s perspective.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • A university degree in Sociology, Communication studies, Journalism, English language, social sciences, or a similar field. Professional qualifications in Media/Communication/photography will be an added advantage.
  • One year of relevant professional experience in developing, producing, and/or editing communications materials, including human interest stories, concept notes, proposals, and reportability to effectively grasp and incorporate inputs/feedback from multiple contributors.
  • High responsible sense of journalistic ethics and in-depth understanding of human and child rights issues.
  • Previous working experience with UNICEF and/or another international development organization is desirable.
  • Fluency in Arabic and English (written and spoken) is required.

Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
