Organizational Setting

FAO in Mozambique is implementing the PROMOVE Agribiz programme- Improving rural competitiveness in Nampula and Zambézia provinces. The overall objective of the PROMOVE Agribiz is to contribute to sustainable, inclusive and broad-based economic growth and poverty reduction in the context of national food and nutrition security and climate change. Thus, the programme contributes primarily to the progressive achievement of SDG Goal 2. End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture and Goal 8. Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all, it also promotes progress towards Goals 1 (end poverty), 5 (gender equality), and 13 (climate action). Moreover, it is aligned with the main agriculture sector policy documents Strategic Plan for the Development of the Agriculture Sector (PEDSA) and National Agriculture Investment Plan (PNISA).

Through agroforestry initiatives, the programme will assess opportunities and prepare conditions to sell carbon credits to private institutions and companies on the voluntary market. It is expected that at least 5 000 households will benefit from the setup of the proposed agroforestry schemes under the project.

Reporting Lines

The Specialist will report directly to the Technical Advisor (TA) of the project, and to the FAO Representative in Mozambique (Budget Holder). S/he will work under the technical guidance of the Lead Technical Officer (LTO).

Technical Focus

The incumbent will cooperate in the implementation of an agroforestry model including traditional cropping of cereals, pulses and vegetables according to seasonality and inclusion of tree cropping (fruit, timber and fodder trees) for boundaries and wind breaks and living fences of the farm, fruit and fuelwood production, IPM, to be related to carbon sequestration and carbon credit generation.

Tasks and responsibilities

• Coordinate with the Farmer Field Schools (FFS) Specialist to set up tree nurseries; • Develop technical content of agroforestry to be used in the training of field technicians and farmers through FFS; • Train FAO´s district field technicians and technicians from implementing partners on agroforestry system and its practices; • Follow up the implementation of agroforestry activities carry out by consultants and implementing partners; • Monitor the implementation, registration, certification and validation of the agroforestry project in the context of carbon credit production and trade; • Follow up effective carbon credit transfer to beneficiaries; • Monitor the adherence of the project implementation to the technical specifications of the registered process; • Follow up technical dimension of plant production and protection of trees and vegetables; • Perform any other duty related to the smooth implementation of the project.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• University degree in Agriculture, Forestry, Natural Resources Management or a closely related field • Eight years of relevant experience in agroforestry • Working knowledge of English, and fluent in Portuguese. • National or Resident of Mozambique
