ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

The United Nations World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. The mission of WFP is to help the world achieve Zero Hunger in our lifetimes. Every day, WFP works worldwide to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need.

JOB PURPOSE

WFP Communications, Advocacy and Marketing Unit aims to enhance public awareness and understanding of WFP’s work in the country. It aims to improve brand recognition through a variety of communication avenues to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. The Unit’s work spreads over a spectrum of tasks which include creating creative content, media engagement, developing stories, writing, and editing external documents. The Communications Intern will support the team in the delivery of this mandate.

We are currently seeking to fill an internship position under the WFP External Relations Unit, - Mozambique, the position will be based at Maputo. The Internship will be for an initial period of six (6) months.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • ​​​​​​University degree or equivalent qualification, preferably in a field relevant to the position such as Communications, Journalism, International Relations, Media, marketing and branding or other relevant fields and studies
  • Be a recent graduate from an undergraduate or graduate programme (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme) from a recognized university and have attended classes in the last 12 months of enrolment in the university.
  • Expert level in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Fluency in oral and written in both English Language and Portuguese Language

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

Under the direct supervision of the Head of External Relations Unit, the Intern will perform the following duties:

  • Monitor media and identify trends and issues
  • Assist in keeping track of important news, events, milestones and other communication opportunities
  • Update media contact database
  • Develop content through infographics, video and graphics and support multiple communication initiatives when required
  • Support Country Office with our multimedia hub database
  • Support internal communications activities
  • Support information management efforts
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and data analysis and highlight trends/issues ensuring deliverables adhere to corporate standards and quality control
  • Support communication with donors, local partners, agencies, NGOs and government institutions
  • Support in preparation of internal and external communications materials, including social media, stories, reports, brochures, leaflets and other formats;
  • Support the development and running of events
  • Provide relevant research and translation services and other ad-hoc support;
  • Help keep accurate records for reporting purposes and help update our mailing lists
  • Other duties related to Communications and Reporting, as required.

DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE

Preferably with at least 4 months of internship experience or able to present a portfolio of non-edited samples of own work prepared for the university (for example: papers, texts, photos, videos, reports, etc).

Training components and learning elements WFP Mandatory courses, sales force, publisher, teams, canva, creative writing and public speaking (WeLearn).

At the end of the assignment, the Intern should:

  • Support WFP to implement its communications strategy.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

  • Duration of assignment will be 6 months with a posibility of extension
  • Duty station/location can be in Maputo or our field offices.
  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, travel to and from WFP internship location, necessary visas and costs related.
  • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$575 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
  • WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education;
