For decades, the Eastern DRC provinces have been plagued by rampant insecurity, with a significant number of security attacks, community conflict, humanitarian needs and incidents against the local population that involved youth. UNFPA commits to provide humanitarian response but the need of maximizing sustainable measures and action in the nexus peace, security and humanitarian in favour of youth is of paramount importance.
Displaced populations and conflict-affected communities face critical needs for food, water, shelter, healthcare, and protection. The risk of GBV is extremely high, particularly for women and girls, who are disproportionately affected by sexual violence and exploitation.
UNFPA implements in Eastern DRC projects that contribute to improving access to reproductive health care, prevention and response services to gender-based violence for displaced and returned populations, as well as host communities and strengthen the restoration/consolidation of peace through the participation of adolescents and young people. UNFPA DRC is implementing several humanitarian projects funded by CERF, ECHO, FCDO,
Japan which focus on improved Sexual and Reproductive Health and GBV interventions and target women, girls, adolescents and youth mainly.
The projects further aim to support the DRC to specifically strengthen the resilience of communities to prevent radicalization and build lasting peace, improve prevention and response to gender-based violence, improve availability and access to information and quality sexual and reproductive health services for women, adolescents and young people in the Eastern areas of the country.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is the second largest country in Africa, and as a result is quite diverse. Accommodation is very expensive in Kinshasa. Supermarkets exist in the large towns, but consumer items are generally very expensive (as everything is imported). For food, local markets offer a much cheaper alternative.
In Kinshasa insecurity related to the relatively volatile political situation as well as various conflict situations, certain places are subject to increasing street and residential crime.
The unit of currency is the Congolese Franc. The US dollar is the other preferred currency. It may be impossible to exchange traveller’s checks away from the capital city. Credit cards are usually accepted in major hotels only in Kinshasa. In larger towns such as Kinshasa, UN Volunteers are recommended to open US Dollar bank accounts, while in other places, banks may be absent (including ATMs) and VLA payments will be processed in cash. UN Volunteers have the possibility to send part of their allowances to a bank account abroad.
