The Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist – Biodiversity and Nursery Management will support the effective monitoring, reporting, and results tracking of biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and nursery management interventions. The assignment is situated within a broader environmental and resilience programming context where restoration of degraded ecosystems, conservation of biodiversity, and strengthening of community-based nursery systems are key priorities.

The role is intended to strengthen evidence-based implementation by supporting the development of monitoring tools, indicator tracking systems, field verification mechanisms, and analytical reporting processes to assess progress, quality, and impact of project activities. The volunteer will contribute to data collection and validation, performance monitoring, documentation of lessons learned, and coordination with implementing partners and communities to improve accountability, adaptive management, and reporting of environmental results.

Through this assignment, the volunteer will support the generation of reliable evidence for programme decision-making and contribute to stronger biodiversity and ecosystem restoration outcomes.

Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Climate Governance Specialist the International UN Volunteer will be expected to perform the following tasks:

Monitoring and Planning • Support development and implementation of M&E plans, indicators, and tracking tools for biodiversity and nursery activities. • Maintain results frameworks, monitoring schedules, and reporting systems.

Data Collection and Field Monitoring • Develop or adapt data collection tools, checklists, and field monitoring templates. • Support collection of quantitative and qualitative data from project sites, nurseries, implementing partners, and communities. • Conduct field visits, spot checks, and verification exercises to monitor implementation progress and validate reported results. • Monitor nursery establishment, seedling production, distribution, planting activities, and restoration progress.

Data Management and Analysis • Consolidate, organize, and maintain project data from multiple sources. • Support data screening, cleaning, validation, and quality assurance processes. • Analyse data to identify trends, implementation gaps, and key findings. • Prepare dashboards, analytical summaries, tables, visualizations, and narrative reports.

Results Tracking and Reporting • Track implementation progress against approved work plans, annual targets, and results frameworks. • Support preparation of progress updates, quarterly and annual reports, and donor reporting inputs. • Verify outputs and results against field evidence and supporting documentation. • Contribute to evidence-based reporting on biodiversity, nursery management, and restoration outcomes.

Knowledge Management and Coordination • Document lessons learned, good practices, implementation challenges, and field observations. • Support preparation of case studies, evidence briefs, and knowledge products. • Strengthen coordination among project teams, implementing partners, government counterparts, and community stakeholders. • Support orientation and guidance on monitoring tools, reporting requirements, and data quality standards.

The incumbent must be a dynamic, multi-functional individual who supports the host entity with professionalism, dedication, and strong client orientation. The following qualifications are required: • Advanced computer skills and proficiency in analytical software (e.g., SPSS, etc.), including full proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.), as well as other IT applications and office technology equipment. • Strong analytical and writing skills, with the ability to analyze, interpret, and present data in a clear and concise manner. • Knowledge of the region will be considered a strong asset. • Demonstrated ability to perform duties effectively under stress and in isolated environments. • Experience in data collection in the Pacific region; experience in the Solomon Islands will be considered an advantage. • Proven ability to work effectively in a multicultural and dynamic environment. • Affinity with, or interest in, development work and volunteerism as a mechanism for sustainable development, as well as interest in the United Nations system. • Sound security awareness. • 3-5 years in Monitoring and Evaluation

Honiara is located on the island of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, a country in the Pacific Ocean. It is the largest city and serves as the political, economic, and administrative capital of the country. Honiara hosts a significant proportion of the national population and functions as the primary hub for business, government, and international organizations.

Climate: Honiara has a tropical rainforest climate, characterized by consistently high humidity and warm temperatures throughout the year. The wet season runs from November to April, while the dry season occurs from May to October. Average temperatures range from 27°C to 30°C (81°F to 86°F), with the heaviest rainfall typically occurring between December and March.

Visas: Most foreign nationals require a visa to enter the Solomon Islands. Visa fees generally range between USD 50 and USD 100, depending on nationality and visa type. Visas can be obtained from Solomon Islands diplomatic missions prior to arrival. Nationals from some Pacific Island countries, such as Vanuatu, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea, may be exempt for short visits.

Language: English is the official language. However, Solomon Islands Pijin is the most widely spoken language and serves as the common lingua franca. Many local languages and dialects are also spoken.

Health: Healthcare services in Honiara are basic, and medical facilities are limited. It is recommended that personnel bring essential medications. Malaria and other tropical diseases are present; therefore, preventive measures such as antimalarial medication, mosquito repellent, and protective clothing are strongly advised. Attention to food and water hygiene is important. Comprehensive medical insurance, including medical evacuation coverage, is essential, as serious medical treatment may require evacuation to Australia or New Zealand.
