This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the IOM Chief of Mission (CoM), the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Provide assistance to meet the timely and efficient implementation of the project activities in close coordination with the CoM.
  2. Support dissemination of the Diaspora Policy, Diaspora National Action Plan, and Immigration and Border Management National Action Plan to all relevant stakeholders.
  3. Provide assistance for the successful organization of the border assessment and its dissemination activities.
  4. Assist CoM in coordination with counterpart entities in the respective national government, as well as provide updates of programme goals and status of implementation to relevant authorities.
  5. Assist the CoM to maintain effective and productive working relationships with government and civil society partners in Labour Migration, Migrant Smuggling, Counter-trafficking and Immigration and Border Management.
  6. Assist in the preparations of workshops and trainings for efficient implementation of the project activities in close coordination with the CoM.
  7. Support CoM in compiling periodic donor reports in line with the M&E plans and agreed reporting schedules;
  8. Compile monthly reports, drawing on M&E activities' outputs where possible, describing the activities, results and challenges of the programme in close coordination with project managers and other relevant project staff;
  9. Document project activities such as capturing case studies, life changing stories for donor reports, update mission website, Facebook, twitter, quarterly newsletter, and local media briefings;
  10. Participate in UN, donor, sectoral, working groups, and other meetings aiming at development of new projects in Labour Migration, Migrant Smuggling, Counter-trafficking and Immigration and Border Management.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

International Relations, International Development, Political Science, Business or Public Administration.

Required experience:

Experience remark:

  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in programmes for migrants and capacity-building activities including labour migration, migrant smuggling, counter trafficking, and immigration and border management;
  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;
  • Knowledge of the region is an advantage;
  • Experienced in organizing consultations, workshops, and seminars with high level stakeholders;
  • Ability to research, analyze and present complex information;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting and presenting skills;
  • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; SPSS or other statistical packages;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines.

Learning Expectations

Learning and development are a central part of the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment and take place before, during and after his or her assignment in the field. Ideally, offering diverse opportunities for learning and development aim to strengthen the volunteer’s skills and competences, improve the quality of the assignment and keep the volunteer’s motivation high.

Learning elements for the UN Youth Volunteer include the development of:

  • Professional skills: including specific competencies and reflection on assignment-related abilities; and on-the-job skills such as time management, problem solving, team building; and career preparedness such as interview skills, CV preparation, job searching.
  • Inter-personal skills: including communication and listening skills; multi-cultural awareness and cultural competency; and conflict and stress management.
  • Volunteering-related skills: including leadership; civic responsibility; and engagement and active participation.

Beyond the learning opportunities provided by UNV, the host agency will support knowledge and capacity development in the technical areas that are relevant to the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment. The host agency will provide, at its expense, UN Youth Volunteers with equal opportunity to participate in training courses and workshops offered to its personnel.

Selection process

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. The selection will be done by the UN Host Entity at the level of the country of assignment. Interviews will be conducted by the UN Host Entity between 29 March and 16 April. Usually these interviews are competency-based.

Assignment Preparation Training

Prior to deployment, the selected candidate will be required to attend a mandatory preparation training from 7 to 11 June 2021 organized by Sida.

COVID-19: In case of travel restrictions, assignments may start remotely or start dates may be postponed.
