UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

In view of the crucial contribution of civil society organizations in the advancement of gender equality, women’s empowerment and women’s rights, the role of civil society and the women’s movement as partners, supporting UN Women’s leadership, is seen as fundamental in the full realization of gender equality, women’s rights and women’s empowerment. UN Women’s unique and critical role in engaging civil society and partnership building with different stakeholders to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment will be key drivers in helping UN Women achieve its strategic goals and fulfil its organizational mandate.

In this context, UN Women is engaging with different key stakeholders including organizations working with/on Men and Boys and masculinities to promote greater accountability for the achievement of gender equality and women´s rights. It is also strengthening its work to respond to the impact of COVID-19, including on women´s rights organizations.

Under the overall direction of the Deputy of the Civil Society Division and relevant Programme Specialists, the consultant will provide support to the Civil Society Division

Duties and Responsibilities

Description of Responsibilities

Support activities related to the Men and Boys, masculinities, and related portfolios

  • Conduct analysis and research on trends and issues related to men and boys role in the promotion of gender equality and women´s rights, including as part of the COVID-19 response
  • Support the development of guidance and policy documents on the role of Men and Boys
  • Analyze corporate data on the work on Men and Boys and other related groups
  • Support the development of presentations, briefing notes, talking points and advocacy tools as needed
  • Support the organization of consultations, events and activities with key partners working on Men and Boys and related constituencies, including as part of the MenEngage Alliance “Ubuntu” Symposium 2020-2021
  • Provide support to corporate processes where work on/with Men and Boys can contribute including to inter-governmental processes, programmatic initiatives, advocacy initiatives such as the HeForShe Campaign among others

Support activities related to the impact of COVID-19 on CSOs, and related portfolios

  • Support analysis and research on trends and issues regarding the impact of COVID-19 on CSOs
  • Analyze corporate data on the impact of COVID-19 on women´s organizations, including as part of UN inter-agency monitoring
  • Support the development of presentations, briefing notes, talking points and advocacy tools as needed
  • Support the organization of relevant presentations and activities
  • Provide support to corporate processes where the impact of COVID-19 on CSOs is assessed including inter-governmental processes, programmatic initiatives, and advocacy initiatives

Provide general support to the Civil Society Division as needed

  • Support the division in the organization of CSW65 and Generation Equality Forum activities as needed
  • Support the division in other areas of work as needed

Functional Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of gender equality and women's rights issues
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with partners, especially civil society organizations
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills
  • Understanding of UN system and familiarity with inter-governmental processes, and especially of UN Women’s mandate will be an asset
  • Excellent IT skills, including databases, extranet and office software packages
  • At least one year of research and/or civil society engagement/advocacy work in the field of gender equality and women´s rights, or gender equality and men and masculinities.
  • Understanding of gender equality and women's empowerment issues

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in social sciences, international relations, communications, women's studies, or a related field is required

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage

Renumeration:

Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
