You have:

  • Advanced Medical Degree (Master's or higher) with current medical registration
  • At least 7 years of relevant and progressively responsible clinical experience, including a minimum of 5 years at the international level.
  • At least 2 years of training and experience in occupational health.
  • Experience in handling administrative issues and supervising staff.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English.
  • Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) or German is an asset.

Organizational Setting

The Department of Management (MT) provides a ‘platform of services’ that serves as a foundation for the successful delivery of the IAEA’s scientific and technical programmes. Its mission statement is as follows: “MT is a partner and a business enabler that champions change and efficiency, leveraging a common purpose”. Thus, among other support activities, it assists a scientific manager in recruiting the right expert, helps a technical officer coordinate the purchase of radiation equipment, and ensures that all Board documents are translated and distributed on a timely basis to Member States.

The Division of Human Resources plans, acquires and manages human resources to help implement IAEA programmes. The Division delivers the full spectrum of HR services, including organizational development and planning, talent acquisition and development, performance management, and administration of compensation and benefits. The Division serves a multicultural workforce of approximately 2300 people from diverse scientific, technical, managerial and professional disciplines.

The VIC (Vienna International Centre) Medical Service serves the staff of all VIC Based Organizations (i.e. the IAEA, the United Nations Office of Vienna, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization), promotes the health of the staff of these organizations, provides for an occupationally safe and healthy work environment, and ensures that the UN Common System medical standards are maintained at the VIC. It renders services to approximately 4500 staff and dependants.

Main Purpose

Reporting to the Medical Director, the Medical Officer provides advice, counselling and treatment (including emergency treatment) towards improving the health of individual staff members; advises management on the health aspects of employment to furthermore optimize the health of staff in general, and gives medical opinions in individual cases.

Role

The Medical Officer is a general specialist with expertise in several medical areas relevant to the VMS, such as, clinical medicine, occupational health, emergency medicine, travel and tropical medicine, radiation protection and medico-legal issues; and a promoter of a healthy and safe work environment.

Functions / Key Results Expected

• Undertakes day-to-day clinical duties (periodical medical examinations, treatment, walk-in-clinic, immunizations, etc.) and advises staff. • Counsels staff on travel and preventive medicine. • Provides first aid and emergency treatment. • Refers staff to outside specialists, coordinates medical/administrative requirements with them and liaises with medical institutions in Vienna and elsewhere. • Leads and participates in health promotion activities. • Investigates occupational and environmental health problems. • Administers, as required and often in cooperation with more senior medical staff, medical clearances (fitness for duty), sick leave, medical evacuations, medical disability, medical insurance claims, etc.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $75602 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 30846*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance
