What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Your role

The role of the Medical Equipment Specialist is to ensure that the medical equipment in health-care facilities run or supported by the ICRC is functioning properly and in accordance with the ICRC's standards. You are able to help troubleshoot complex medical equipment either by visiting the health facility and providing direct support to the local counterparts or advising and guiding them remotely.

Main responsibilities

  • Conduct assessments of health care facilities to determine medical equipment needs
  • Advise on planning, implementing and managing medical equipment in health programmes.
  • Support the supported hospital’s Biomedical Engineer Department in planning and implementing a preventive maintenance plan for all medical equipment
  • Coordinate the regular maintenance and repair of medical equipment in supported hospitals.
  • Conduct troubleshooting and undertake planned preventive maintenance and repair of medical equipment
  • Substitute the manufacturer's engineers in places where access cannot be granted
  • Contribute to managing medical equipment budget of supported health facilities
  • Order and install medical equipment and train clinical staff on the correct use and care of equipment.
  • Perform quality control of medical equipment
  • Report assessment findings and action points with Hospital Project Manager or Health Coordinator
  • Liaises with the ICRC Water and Habitat and Logistics team on matters related to medical equipment
  • Represent the hospital project internally and externally on all matters related to medical equipment

Education and experience required

  • Masters/bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering or similar field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in managing medical equipment in hospital settings. International exposure highly desirable
  • Broad experience working with clinical engineering practices, medical equipment lifecycle, project management and medical equipment suppliers in various settings
  • Fluency in English and/or French
  • A good command of a second language is a strong asset (Spanish, Arabic, Russian)
  • Strongly motivated by the humanitarian field

Desired profile and skills

  • Able to work under pressure and lead a multicultural team in a complex environment
  • Previous experience in international humanitarian projects
  • Positive, flexible and able to adapt to challenging living conditions and/or unstable security environment
  • Previous experience within the Red Cross & Red Crescent movement is an asset

Our operational context

  • In line with the principle of neutrality, the ICRC dœs not assign personnel to a country of which they are nationals
  • Our field staff members must be in good health and will have to do a medical check-up prior to departure in the field
  • Our field staff members are prepared to accept unaccompanied postings (i.e. no spouse, partner, children or dependents) for at least the first 24 months
  • In line with our security guidelines, our staff members must hold a manual driving license
