You have:
- Proven ability to achieve coverage of mainstream media of development and economics/trade-related issues.
- An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in communications, journalism, advertising, public relations, marketing, or related areas.
- A minimum of seven years of relevant experience in media relations, mainstream journalism/communications, or communications coordination.
- Fluency in English (both written and spoken) is required.
- Knowledge of Spanish is a strong asset; Knowledge of another official UN language (French, Arabic, Chinese and Russian) is an asset.
Result of Service The work of the consultant will help enhance the visibility of the work of UNCTAD both globally and in key specific countries.
Work Location Geneva
Expected duration The consultancy contract is for the duration of 12 months. Contract Period: January - December 2022, Effective working time: 240 days
Duties and Responsibilities The Office of UNCTAD Secretary-General is looking for an expert in media relations to support UNCTAD's presence in key global media in its efforts to give wider visibility to its work.
The Media Relations Consultant will undertake media relations and develop high-quality content for Special Working Agreements communications channels. The consultant will be primarily responsible for leading media and public relations work to support the Office of the Secretary-General.
The Media Relations Consultant’s work will play a central role in building awareness of and support for UNCTADs and its priority issues, both globally and in key target countries and must: - Support implementation of media strategies, tactics and messages to achieve maximum measurable impact on UNCTAD’s profile, advising the Communications Team, the OSG on media opportunities; - Build and maintain excellent relationships with relevant global journalists, broadcasters, and commentators both international and target country media; - Identify and develop regional or national stories; - Develop media content, op-eds, interview briefings and speaking points; - Pitch stories to journalists and organize targeted briefings and media events; - Support all UNCTAD spokespersons in engagement with the media, prepare talking points, and facilitate radio, TV and print media interviews where necessary; - Monitor, analyze and evaluate media coverage; - Undertake any other responsibilities, tasks or activities as reasonably required, in support of the Communications Team.
Qualifications/special skills Skills: Proven ability to achieve coverage of main-stream media of development and economics/trade-related issues. Knowledge of the UN and trade/economics is a distinct advantage. Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to work effectively under pressure. Academic Qualifications: An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in communications, journalism, advertising, public relations, marketing, or related areas. Experience: A minimum of seven years of relevant experience in media relations, mainstream journalism/ communications, or communications coordination.
