To strengthen the RCO’s early warning capacity, trend analysis, and public advocacy, the SHRA requires structured media monitoring of Sri Lanka's national and regional press landscape.

This Online Volunteer assignment aims to systematically track, analyze, and digest Tamil print, digital, and social media coverage related to socio-economic situation, political developments, human rights, civil liberties, and legislative updates.

Under the overall supervision of the Senior Human Rights Advisor and direct supervision of the Human Rights Officer, the Online Volunteer will virtually support:

• Conduct daily screening of prominent print newspapers, online news portals, and social media channels in Tamil for key human rights developments, public sentiment, and policy debates. • Identify, track, and log news items and online narratives related to key human rights themes, such as freedom of expression and assembly, hate speech, non-discrimination, minority rights, and rule of law. • Immediately flag high-priority, time-sensitive incidents, risks, or emerging trends to the supervisor via agreed digital communication channels. • Draft brief, objective weekly media digests and summary notes in English, highlighting key headlines, emerging narratives, and editorial perspectives. • Liaise virtually with counterpart online volunteer to avoid duplication and ensure balanced, cross-regional media coverage.

• Enrolled in or completed a University degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in Journalism, Media/Communications, Human Rights, Law, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, or related Social Sciences. • Demonstrated interest or experience (academic, professional, or voluntary) in media monitoring, news analysis, journalism, or public policy research. • Strong familiarity with Sri Lanka's national and regional media landscape (print, broadcast, and digital news portals). • Experience conducting media content analysis, drafting executive summaries, or working on open-source intelligence/trend tracking. • Practical understanding of human rights concepts and socio-political context in Sri Lanka. • Ability to extract objective facts and key themes from news reporting while maintaining strict neutrality. • Demonstrated skill in synthesizing news articles into concise, structured English summaries. • Proficiency in web navigation, search engines, and news aggregation platforms. • Command of basic document editing tools (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or spreadsheet tracking tools). • Familiarity with major social media platforms (X/Twitter, Facebook, YouTube) used for local news dissemination. • Access to a personal computer/laptop and a stable internet connection for daily remote research and email communication. • Prior exposure to UN system terminology or international organization workflows is considered an asset, but not required.
