Duties and Responsibilities Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of disaster reduction and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in socio-economic and humanitarian fields. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, UNDRR has around 100 staff located in its Headquaters (HQ) in Geneva, Switzerland, and 5 regional offices and other field presences.

Specifically, UNDRR coordinates international efforts in disaster risk reduction, and guides, monitors and reports on the progress of the implementation of the international strategy for disaster reduction, now the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), 2015-2030; campaigns to create global awareness of disaster risk reduction benefits and empower people to reduce their vulnerability to hazards; advocates for greater investments in DRR to protect people's lives and assets, and for increased and informed participation of men and women of all stakeholder groups in reducing disaster risk; and informs and connects people by providing practical services and tools such as Prevention Web, publications on good practices, and by leading the preparation of the Global Assessment Report on DRR and the organization of the Regional Platform (RP) for DRR.

Duties and Responsabilities:

The individual contractor will report to the Public information assistant of the UNDRR Regional Office for the Americas and the Caribbean (ROAMC), in close coordination with the communication unit at HQ and the regional teams of the RP. Technical support for this position may be provided by other staff members of the Regional Office, especially from administrative unit.

1. Follow up the governance and communication structure for the regional media network of the Americas and the Caribbean. 2. Follow up the engagement and communication with the regional media network. 3. Strengthen our relationship and visibility with regional media outlet agencies. 4. Design and implement relevant regional media training modules based on UNDRR corporate material. 5. Implement regular communication with media networks (newsletters, meetings, innovative channels, invitation to events, and Q&A sessions). 6. Support and strengthen opposite the editorial page (OP ED) strategy in local media. 7. Organize Q&A sessions for the media on relevant topics (early warning, etc). 8. Participate in the inclusion of media communication and support in National and Local DRR Plans (target E) in selected countries. 9. Identify good practices, impact stories and experiences for the promotion and dissemination at local, national, regional, and global levels as well as provide inputs for effective communication and visibility in line with UNDRR and donor requirements. 10. Support the World Broadcasting Union trainings in the region with a focus on prevention saves lives and early warning systems as well as the engagement with the disaster fighters campaign in the Caribbean. 11. Support the strategy for DRR regional influencers on Social Media. 12. Develop a strategy for media participation in the VIII RP session and other preparatory events (media invitation, media registration, media handbook preparation, media section web page, press conferences organization, talking points preparation for media engagement; general media coordination and management, press releases, RP, media training, media monitoring among other actions concerning media). 13. Organization of media events and the campaign on Early Warning Systems (EWS) in the Caribbean in the context of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2023.

Qualifications/special skills Skills: - Excellent analytical, reporting and communication skills are required. - Ability to work in highly stressful contexts and under tight deadlines is required. - Knowledge of the work carried out by the UNDRR Americas and Caribbean office is a plus. Academic Qualifications: A high school diploma is required. A first-level university degree in journalism, communication, media relations, international relations or related fields is an advantage. Experience: - A minimum of 3 years of experience in the field of journalism and media relation is required. - Experience on media relations development and events is desirable. - Experience with regional media is desirable. - Experience in working in a multicultural context is desirable Language: Fluency in English and Spanish is required. Knowledge of another UN working language is an advantage.
