Kinshasa is a family-duty station. It is the capital and largest city of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is the third-largest country in Africa. It is an international and multicultural city with all usual amenities. Accommodation is expensive but largely available. Supermarkets are implanted all around the city and country with imported goods from Europe and Asia. Local Markets offer cheaper alternatives for produce and other foods. The security situation in Kinshasa is relatively calm but unpredictable. The country will organize national elections in 2023. Risks to personnel are reduced by strict adherence to UN security guidelines, instructions and other mitigating measures. Crime rates, although not alarming, give some cause for concern. It is mandatory for all personnel to receive a security briefing upon arrival. Basic medical coverage is provided through the UN system as well as private clinics and public hospitals in Kinshasa.
