Contract

The United Nations Resident Coordinator (RC) Office (RCO) coordinates the work of all UN organizations that are involved in development activities at the country level. The RCO's goal is to maximize the UN's work in a coordinated way to provide a coherent response to national needs and priorities. This is done within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and other international commitments. Assignment context
The Peace and Development Advisors (PDA) deployed to Cameroon work under the joint UNDP-DPPA program focused on conflict prevention and sustaining peace. PDAs support national stakeholders in addressing political, security, and developmental challenges while promoting peace. They provide strategic analysis, risk management, and early warning support to the Resident Coordinator and UN Country Teams. PDAs are involved in key areas such as electoral violence prevention, social cohesion, reconciliation, and responding to cross-border challenges. Their work also involves close collaboration with regional and international partners, including the UN Headquarters, special political missions, and civil society, to develop and implement conflict-sensitive strategies in alignment with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This vacancy targets specifically people with people with a disability in the United Nations in general and the office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in particular and aims to strengthen their role in the UN’s inputs to support peacebuilding and sustaining peace efforts in the country. The Media Analysis Specialist will join the Peace and Development Team and will work directly under the supervision of the Peace and Development Advisor.
Under the direct supervision of the Peace and Development Advisor, the Media Analyst will be expected to perform the following tasks: Conduct daily monitoring of traditional media outlets (print, radio, TV) and digital media (news websites, blogs) to track key political developments. Track discussions, trends, and sentiment on major social media platforms (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok) related to political events, parties, and leaders. Analyze media content to identify dominant narratives, key issues, and emerging political trends. Identify key influencers, political actors, and networks shaping public opinion on political issues. Produce daily, weekly, monthly, and ad-hoc political media reviews for RC, UNDP Senior Management and UNCT. Work closely with communications teams, and other stakeholders to ensure that media analysis aligns with the broader strategic objectives of the organization. Create and maintain a comprehensive database of media sources, key influencers, and important political events.

Yaoundé is family duty station, classified as a “B” Duty Station. The country is with a tropical climate. There are two rainy seasons (April-May and September-October). The average temperature is 25 degrees Celsius. Health: UN Volunteers should be aware that they are exposed to a number of tropical diseases and should complete all medical formalities specified in the offer of assignment before travelling and bring with them sufficient and appropriate medical supplies. The following vaccinations are required and/or recommended prior to travel or upon arrival: Covid-19, yellow fever (required for travellers arriving), polio, rabies, tetanus/diphtheria, measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), malaria (prophylaxis is recommended for almost all of the country). UN staff has access to a fully operational UN medical clinic, run by the UN Doctors, during office hours. There is also a selection of other health facilities available in Cameroon. Accommodation: The UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. However the UNV Field Unit will provide the list of UNDSS recommended neighbourhoods and put the newly recruited UN Volunteer with other UN Volunteers to facilitate his/her adaptation. Power and water: in most regions, including Yaounde, both electricity and water is readily available. It is recommended to rent a flat with a generator in the event of a power failure. Food and diet: fresh food is seasonal but varied. Most staple foods are common in the supermarkets. Yaounde has a selection of reasonably priced restaurants with good health standards. The usual precautions need to be taken when eating outside the home: no salads, bottled water and all meat to be thoroughly cooked. Minor stomach upsets are almost inevitable at some stage. Bank and Communication: The currency is XAF and in Yaoundé you can retrieve money from ATM with international credit cards such as Visa or Master. In general, card payments in shops or supermarkets is rare and cash payments are preferrable. Visa cards function better. It is advisable to open a rechargeable phone money account such as MTN or Orange Money upon arrival. Cameroon is a unique country; however, it requires more stamina and commitment than elsewhere to make life comfortable and affordable. Therefore, flexibility and the ability and willingness to live and work in hazardous and harsh conditions involving physical hardship and little comfort are essential.
