Overview

Provide technical support for marine cage culture development in Iran

You have:

• A recognized postgraduate degree in aquaculture and or fisheries related discipline
• At least 5 years of experience in marine aquaculture, good aquaculture practices or related matters
• Fluency in written and spoken English
• National of Iran or resident in the country with a regular work permit

Organizational Setting

The Islamic Republic of Iran ranks second in the Middle East and 17th in the world in terms of total aquaculture production. Aquaculture production in the Islamic Republic of Iran constitutes roughly 40 percent of total fish production and 10 percent of agricultural exports of the country, which accounts for about 1 percent of overall national Gross Domestic Product.

As a result of the increasing impacts of climate change, including the sharp precipitation decline during recent years and consequently the shortage of available freshwater, marine cage culture has been identified as a key national priority to supply animal proteins, healthy food and alternative livelihoods to the people of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Yet the Country is facing a number of challenges in cage culture development, such as insufficient technical know-how, technologies and equipment; general shortage of specific expertise within the cage culture sub-sector and government institutions; inadequate marketing plan for cage culture productions, and insufficient supplies of fingerlings of the commercial species cultured.

Reporting Lines

The incumbent will perform his/her tasks and duties under the overall guidance of the FAO Representative to the I.R. Iran, direct supervision of the Assistant FAOR (Programme), in close coordination with the Project Officer, technical guidance of the Lead Technical Officer, in close contact with the other FAO colleagues and in collaboration with the Iran Fisheries Organization of the Ministry of Agriculture Jahad.

Technical Focus

In the framework of the TCP project, FAO mobilizes international and national expertise on marine cage culture, supporting the assessment, research and development, management, as well as pilot design and site selection, all aimed at contributing to strengthening Iranian capacities in terms of knowledge, skills and management on marine cage culture. In close collaboration with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, FAO will organize a series of training workshops for national experts and practitioners. (S)he will be assigned to undertake the following duties and responsibilities:

Tasks and responsibilities

• Review and update national policy strategies and programs for marine cage culture;
• Review aquaculture value chain/supply chain relevant to marine cage culture development;
• Review of the national research/academic capacities in relation to marine cage aquaculture;
• Review the current marine cage culture system, farmed species, fish health management and water quality monitoring;
• Participate in the technical workshops, on-farm trainings and study tours;
• Technical assistance to NPC to conduct Stakeholder analysis and mapping;
• Technical assistance to the international experts to hold workshops, study tours and on farms training;
• Technical assistance to the international experts to supervise the implementation of the presented protocols in the hatcheries and cage farms;
• Collaborate to prepare project reports including terminal report on activities and lessons learned in collaboration with the international experts and LTO.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• A recognized postgraduate degree in aquaculture and or fisheries related discipline
• At least 5 years of experience in marine aquaculture, good aquaculture practices or related matters.
• Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English
• National of Iran or resident in the country with a regular work permit.
