Founded in 1972 following the landmark UN Conference on the Human Environment, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading environmental authority in the United Nations system. UNEP's mandate is to find solutions to the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste. The mission of UNEP is to inspire, inform, and enable nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.

UNEP Tanzania Office is part of the Africa office, headed by the Regional Director and Representative. The architecture of the UNEP Office in Tanzania is inclined to a representational role, coordination and integration of UNEP’s inputs and commitments to the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) and liaison with the host government.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Tanzania office is undertaking the critical task of updating its country strategy. This initiative is driven by the urgent need to address evolving environmental challenges and align Tanzania's national environmental policies with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Tanzania, endowed with rich biodiversity and diverse ecosystems, faces significant environmental pressures that necessitate a comprehensive and adaptive strategic approach.

Responsibilities: - Data Collection and Compilation: Gather and compile Tanzania’s relevant climate data, including temperature, precipitation, sea level rise, extreme weather events, and other climatic variables, from various sources such as meteorological stations, satellite imagery, and scientific literature. - Vulnerability analysis: Conduct vulnerability analysis using GIS to assess the vulnerability of different regions and sectors in Tanzania to climate change impacts, such as changes in land cover, water availability, agricultural productivity, and natural hazards. - Through a combination (as applicable) of remote sensing, GIS, climate modeling, and stakeholder engagement, the exercise will produce detailed climate change maps and vulnerability assessments Output: - Mapping of Tanzania’s climate change vulnerability - Methodology and impact report
