OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

Withinthe framework of the WHO/Kenya Country Cooperation Strategy (CCS), the specific objectives of the UCN cluster to which the incumbent will contribute, are to: (i) provide leadership on disease control coordination, partnership and resource mobilization; (ii) contribute to the development of WHO disease control technical products, services and tools including adoption of new technologies and innovations; (iii) support generation and use of strategic information for action and decision making including optimizing investment; and (iv) provide or facilitate provision of technical support in deployment of WHO technical products and services and institutional capacity building, including support to national disease programmes and regulatory authorities.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  1. Provide leadership for malaria vaccine implementation in Kenya;
  2. Support use of WHO technical products through timely and high quality adoption/adaptation and implementation of WHO technical products for malaria vaccination;
  3. Support provision of evidence-based advice on malaria vaccination, and support the convening and brokering of appropriate solutions through developing and/or supporting systems and capacities for “evidence generation and use” including malaria vaccine related operational and implementation research, programme reviews, and development and implementation of country evidence-based strategic plans;
  4. Keep malaria vaccination on the radar and drive the agenda through stakeholder meetings, special advocacy days and mass media engagements, and producing and disseminating relevant reports on malaria vaccination in Kenya;
  5. Support mobilization/alignment of resources for malaria vaccination through effective engagement with donors and partners and technical and financial accounting for resources including WHO statutory accounting;
  6. Support development of country operational partnerships focused on leveraging partnerships to deliver transformational change and significant impact of country programmes, promoting a coherent position on issues related to malaria vaccination, and delivering support through a shared approach by partners;
  7. Perform any other related duties as assigned by the supervisor or WHO Representative.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: University degree in Medicine or other health field. Desirable:TTraining in medical epidemiology, malaria and/or vaccinology. Master's degree in Public Health

Experience

Essential: At least five (5) years of experience in in planning, management and implementation of malaria control interventions or management of immunization system. Desirable: Working experience with the WHO or other international experience would be an asset. A minimum of 3 years of working experience in large public health projects would be an asset. Experience of work in the field of vector control in humanitarian emergency situation.

Skills

  • Expert knowledge of either malaria control or vaccinology/immunization systems and working knowledge of the other
  • Working knowledge of the use of data for action including use of data for malaria or communicable diseases stratification and interventions tailoring.
  • Ability to establish effective networks and working relationships with people of different nationalities and cultural background.
  • Computer skills - Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and data analysis, browsing and information searching on the internet.
