Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Electrical and Machine Shop under the Electrical Unit (EU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS).

The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at the UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration.

The incumbent reports to the Foreperson of the Electrical and Machine Shop.

Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Foreperson of the Electrical and Machine Shop under the Electrical Unit (EU), the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: - Fabricates, overhauls, calibrates and repairs various types of equipment, which are located throughout the UN complex and offsite leased premises. - In collaboration with the electricians, performs and oversees diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance on automated doors and vehicle entry systems. - Performs and oversees repair and replacement of door hardware and closers. - Proficiently use precision instruments and equipment, such as Vernier calibers, micrometers, height gauges, squares, dial indicators, etc. Maneuvers machine tools such as lathes, milling machine grinders, saws, radial drills, taps, etc. - Interprets blueprints and schematics in coordination with the Foreperson of the Shop and the building engineers. - Receives work orders assigned through the computerized work order system. Reviews blueprint and instructions for the assigned work order and inspects the job site to study what has to be performed. Set up machine tools to perform precise machinery operations. - Fabricates, repairs, and welds sheet metal, including HVAC ducting. - Coordinates with other trade shops within PES and perform maintenance work of the various building systems. - Prepare requisition requests for all materials and equipment required. Fill out all work orders that are relating to the Machine Shop. - Supervises and coordinates work schedules of staff in the absence of the Foreperson as and when required. - Perform other duties as assigned.

Is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns. Shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations; commitment to implementing the goal of gender equality by ensuring the equal participation and full involvement of women and men in all aspects of work.

Education High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Work Experience A minimum of seven years of related experience in the field of general building maintenance, such as a machinist, mechanic, welder, sheet metal is required.

Experience with the use of hand and power tools related to the trade is required.

Experience in supervising personnel is desirable.

Experience in the maintenance of vehicle barrier systems is desirable.

Experience in the maintenance of automated doors is desirable.

Experience with basic electricity and control wiring is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

Job requires standing, walking, kneeling, crawling and lifting from 10-100 pounds on a daily basis. Work in a machine room include extensive noise, low head clearance and other hazards. Candidate must be available to work Saturday's and/or evenings if required.
