Org. Setting and Reporting The post is located in the Office for the Peacekeeping Strategic Partnership (OPSP) in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations at the United Nations Headquarters, New York. The incumbent reports directly to the Director of the Office for Peacekeeping Strategic Partnerships.

The Department of Peace Operations (DPO) serves as an integrated "centre of excellence" for United Nations Peace operations, responsible for preventing, responding to and managing conflict and sustaining peace in the context of mandates in countries where peace operations under its purview are deployed. This includes facilitating and implementing political agreements, providing integrated strategic, political, operational and management advice, direction and support to peace operations; developing political, security and integrated strategies, leading integrated analysis and planning of peace operations and backstopping those operations.

Responsibilities The Logistics Operations Officer will provide comprehensive, coherent and objective reviews of all aspects related to Mission support for ongoing peacekeeping operations, including supply chain management, materials management, transportation, maintenance, contracts and services management; communications, information technology, engineering and medical services that contribute to the role of uniformed personnel in implementing their mandates. The tasks include reviewing, evaluation and advising on the following areas:

- Planning, coordination, integration, management and oversight of logistics support operations.

- Effective and timely provision and coordination of diverse logistics support requirements.

- Integration of the implementation of logistics support plans at all field missions.

- Compliance with UN rules, regulations and procedures including TCC’/PCCs adherence to MOUs and COE.

- Coordination of field requests for assistance with DPO units, DPA, DM and permanent missions to the UN.

- Policy and procedures documentation for DPO field logistics support.

- Liaison between field missions and Headquarters staff on logistics matters and coordination of day-to-day support of logistics operations.

- Planning and coordination of logistics support to new, sustaining, expanding, contracting and liquidating peacekeeping operations.

- Plans that establish and direct a fully integrated, field mission joint logistics operations centre in accordance with existing UN directives.

- Coordination of logistics support activities of multi-national civilian, military and inter-departmental staff. .

- Participates in or leads technical survey missions and verification missions to troop contributing countries.

- Ensures the monitoring of DPO material and personnel movement operations.

- Ensures that logistics requirements take account of gender-specific needs.

- Develops plans and procedures for assessing material, staff, troops and their movements, planning and costing of operational budgets.

- Performs other related duties as required.

Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in business administration, public administration, engineering, law or other relevant field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in land or air transport, logistics operations in military, police, commercial or international organisations, or related area is required.

Experience supporting logistics within a United Nations peacekeeping operation or similar international organisation is desirable.

National police or military experience is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
