How can you make a difference?

The Local Security Assistant reports to the Security Officer in Aleppo for supervision. The Security Assistant provides technical, operational, and administrative assistance to the Supervisor in support of their role as it relates to ensuring the safety and security of personnel and their eligible family members as well as safeguarding UNICEF premises, assets, and resources at the duty station. In carrying out the below duties, the incumbent is expected to follow instructions precisely and strictly comply with supervisor’s instructions and UN Security-related policies, rules, and procedures.

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide a comprehensive review of Aleppo security situation on a daily basis through local media and other open media sources, advise Staff Security Specialist on trends and/or incidents with early warning value that could affect UNICEF personnel, assets, and operations.
  2. Conduct field trips to support sub-offices or UNICEF field missions at short notice whenever Staff Security Specialist requests.
  3. Maintain UNICEF Warden System up-to-date, including updating lists for staff and eligible dependents. Ensure that fire safety arrangements, plans for fire/building evacuation, relocation/evacuation of staff to a safe haven are updated and efficiently implemented, and resolve problems related to relocation/evacuation.
  4. Maintain Minimum Operational Security Standards (MOSS) for equipment; assist in developing and implementing MOSS and ensuring that all UNICEF offices comply.
  5. Act as the direct focal point for security guards in the area assigned; support security guards in solving problems, report any incidents to Staff Security Specialist; authorize a change of shifts, and verify attendances and/or absences of security guards.
  6. Keep track of all visiting UNICEF staff to the country and register UNICEF staff movements in Aleppo; map UNICEF offices, sub-offices, operations and staff residents using Google Earth and Google mapping.
  7. Be on call 24/7 to provide security & safety support to Staff Security Specialist, UNICEF personnel, and dependents when required. Assist field staff in their security clearance requests through UNDSS Syria.
  8. Maintain, update and regularly test/exercise the NCO/NFO Warden System, Communication Trees and the tracking of UNICEF staff /visitors. Update, maintain and test building evacuation and emergency plan/s.
  9. Perform any other related duties assigned by the supervisor.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Completion of secondary education, supplemented by relevant technical courses and/or university courses in a relevant discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in Admin / Operations with or a related field is required. At least one year of security-related activities is highly desired.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
