The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan was established in 2002 as a political Peace Keeping mission, directed and supported by the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Missions – DPKO. Staff Counselling provides counselling services to cope with crises, manage relationships and develop better ways of relating to others. What can we help with is stress, depression, anxiety, anger, alcohol or substance problems, balancing work and personal life. Decision making & managing change, adjusting to new circumstances and parent/child/partner/colleague conflict.

Under the direct supervision of Chief Operations through the Deputy Chief Operations, the National UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

• To assist in the preparation of routine and special security reports and publications. • To assist in drafting security procedures and regulations • To assist in coordinating with Afghan security authorities • To assist in the daily operations of the crisis coordination center • To assist in the training of UN female staff members, particularly in the conduct of Women's Security Awareness Training

• Integrity and professionalism: demonstrated expertise in the area of specialty and ability to apply sound judgment; high degree of autonomy, personal initiative, and ability to take ownership; willingness to accept broad responsibilities and ability to work independently under established procedures in a politically sensitive environment, while exercising discretion, impartiality, and neutrality; responsive and client-oriented;

• Commitment to continuous learning: initiative and willingness to learn new skills and stay abreast of new developments in the area of expertise; ability to adapt to changes in the work environment;

• Planning and organizing: Effective organizational and problem-solving skills and ability to manage a large volume of work in an efficient and timely manner; ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate, and monitor (own) work; ability to work under pressure, with conflicting deadlines, and to handle multiple concurrent projects/activities;

• Teamwork and respect for diversity: the ability to operate effectively across organizational boundaries; ability to establish and maintain effective partnerships and harmonious working relations in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity and gender;

• Communication: proven interpersonal skills; good spoken and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear and concise reports; ability to communicate and empathize with staff (including national staff, volunteers, counterparts, and local interlocutors coming from very diverse backgrounds; capacity to transfer information and knowledge to a wide range of different target groups;

A minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience in administration or administrative assistant.

Sound security awareness; Good communication skills, including the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical staff at all levels in a clear and concise style; Have affinity with or interest in humanitarian relief, post-conflict situations, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN system. Positive and professional attitude, able to organize, maintain composure and prioritize work under pressure, work overtime when necessary, and be able to coordinate multiple tasks and maintain attention to detail.

The contract lasts for the period indicated above with possibility of extensions subject to availability of funding, operational necessity and satisfactory performance. However, there is no expectation of renewal of the assignment.

Travel to duty station (if applicable) and a Settling-In-Grant will be provided in the event the duty station is not within commuting distance from the place of recruitment. The applicable Volunteer Living Allowance is provided monthly to cover housing, utilities and normal cost of living expenses. Life, health and permanent disability insurance are included ) and final repatriation (if applicable).

Furthermore, in non-family duty stations that belong to hardship categories D or E, as classified by the ICSC, a Well-Being Differential (WBD) on a monthly basis will be provided.
