Duties and Responsibilities 1. Background of the assignment:

United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI's goals are: - to advance understanding of crime-related problems; - to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; - to support the respect of international instruments and other standards; - to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance.

2. Purpose of the assignment:

This position is located within the Counter-Terrorism Programme of UNICRI. In the framework of the project “Gender-based Discrimination and Prevention of Violent Extremism (PVE) in the Sahel”, the local researcher is envisaged to support UNICRI in conducting research aimed at understanding how violent extremist groups are reshaping gender relations in urban and rural contexts in Niger. The local researcher will play a central role in the collection of data and elaboration of data analysis. Research locations will include Niamey and the Tillabe´ri region.

3. Specific tasks to be performed by the consultant:

Under the supervision of the Programme Officer, and in close collaboration with the project team, the incumbent will perform the following tasks:

  • Review the research tools – including questionnaires, interviews and focus groups questions – to ensure they are relevant and context-specific;
  • Identify relevant key informant interviewees, focus groups participants and questionnaires recipients;
  • Liaise with local communities, civil society organizations and women associations, national and local authorities and experts to organize the collection of data in the relevant target areas of Niger;
  • Collect primary data by conducting 6-10 key informant interviews, 3 focus groups, and by administering 50 questionnaires;
  • Share with UNICRI data’s means of verification including interview notes, focus groups notes, questionnaires data;
  • Elaborate a short preliminary report to include an analysis of information and primary data collected as well as good practice examples and recommendations aimed at guiding future P/CVE initiatives, projects and actions in the target area;
  • Perform other work-related duties as requested.

    Qualifications/special skills Advanced university degree (i.e. Master or equivalent) in gender studies, social studies, criminology, security or other related fields is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of professional work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A minimum of three years of relevant working experience in conducting research and analysis on topics related to social sciences and/or gender equality and/or security is required; Previous work experience on issues pertaining to prevention of violent extremism and/or gender in the relevant geographical region is highly desirable.

    Languages Fluency in French is required. Fluency in Arabic is desirable. Knowledge of English is desirable.

    Additional Information 1. This position is subject to local recruitment. Applicants for this position must be authorized to work in the designated country (Niger).
