Overview

Support livestock innovations and analyze value chains for sustainable agriculture.

You have:

  • Advanced university degree in animal science, agricultural, environmental, biological science, or related field.
  • Five years of relevant experience in agricultural or sustainability policy analysis and formulation with a strong focus on innovation.
  • Working knowledge (proficiency - level C) of English and intermediate knowledge (intermediate proficiency - level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

Organizational Setting

FAO's Animal Production and Health Division (NSA) supports Member Nations to strengthen the contribution of the livestock sector towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is committed to assist countries to approach zero hunger while improving the management of livestock systems. Science and innovation as a central driving force for achieving more sustainable, productive and resilient livestock systems. Innovations in technological, institutional, social, policy and financial dimensions throughout livestock value chains can accelerate the sustainable transformation of the livestock sector.

The post is located in the Livestock Innovation, Climate and Post Harvesting Solutions Branch (NSAL) of the Animal Production and Health Division (NSA) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.

Reporting Lines

The Livestock Policy Officer (Innovation) reports to the Chief, NSAL.

Technical Focus

The incumbent will support the team identifying, documenting and analysing livestock innovations along the value chain and identify best practices in the sector from different geographical and economic contexts in different production systems and contribute to multi-stakeholder partnerships within the division.

Key Results

Research, technical analysis, and project related services to support the delivery of programme projects, products, and services.

Key Functions

  • Researches and analyses technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional and technology related information, data and statistics and/or related policy issues to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services.
  • Produces a variety of technical information, data, statistics and reports as well as input for technical documents and web pages.
  • Provides technical support/analysis to various assessments, studies and initiatives and provides technical backstopping to field projects.
  • Collaborates in the development of improved/updated tools, systems, processes and databases.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary teams, and/or leads working groups/teams collaborates with other Divisions/Offices/Centres on work groups and committees and promotes best practices.
  • Collaborates in, provides technical backstopping to and ensures the quality/effectiveness of capacity development activities within Member Nations such as policy support, organizational development and individual learning events including preparation of related information, learning materials, on-line tools.
  • Promotes knowledge sharing and best practices at international meetings and conferences and influences partners in stakeholder consultations.
  • Supports resource mobilization activities in accordance with the FAO Strategic Framework.

Specific Functions

  • Collects, analyses and reports data on innovation in livestock value chains across diverse contexts.
  • Supports the secretariat of the Livestock Environmental Assessment Partnership (LEAP).
  • Contributes to multi-stakeholder initiatives related to the livestock sector.
  • Engages with private sector partners to promote best practices in the livestock sector.
  • Prepares communication material including publications, reports, policy briefs, and other documents highlighting key findings.
  • Serves as the division's focal point for innovation, preparing outreach and communication materials in collaboration with other Divisions/Offices and Centres.
  • Performs other related tasks.

  • Extent and relevance of experience in the private sector.
