• As an active UNITAD team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality support rendered to UNITAD and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including: • Efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality legal support rendered to UNITAD in the accomplishment of her/his functions. • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed. • Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Chief, Office of Field Investigations or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Legal Officer will:

• Support the Chief, Office of Field Investigations in the implementation of the case-building modality focused on the development of casefiles relating to the international crimes committed by Da’esh/ISIL in cooperation with the Iraqi judiciary; • Work within a small unit of national staff dedicated to facilitating cooperation between the judicial authorities in Iraq and members of the Investigative Team under this modality; • Provide legal review/guidance of cases and related evidence under this modality; cooperate with colleagues in the Office of Field Investigations and Office of Evidence Management that are supporting the implementation of this modality; • Help organize, monitor and track activities relating to the case-building modality and ensure the Chief, Office of Field Investigations is kept abreast of developments and progress in a comprehensive fashion relating to this modality; • Draft legal and strategic written outputs, as instructed by the Chief, Office of Field Investigations, to help with advancing the work of the modality.

• Five years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in international humanitarian or criminal law or other relevant programmes; experience in advising and training national judicial counterparts in the field of international humanitarian or international criminal law is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization or working in Iraq • Experience conducting legal review of criminal cases and evidence linked to international crimes with a view to supporting national/international investigations is an asset • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills as well as sccuracy and professionalism in document production and editing; • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development; • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment; • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines; • Have affinity with or interest in international humanitarian and criminal law, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

The UN Volunteer will live in Baghdad, which is not a family duty station. The official offices of UNITAD will be located inside the “International Zone”, which comprised all UN Offices operating out of Baghdad.

Generally speaking, stringent security measures are in place throughout the country, and UN Volunteers, as other UN staff, are quite limited in all duty stations in Iraq when it comes to movement (walking virtually not allowed). Movement is done inside the “International Zone”, in armored vehicles.
