Overview

Provide legal and analytical support for a time-sensitive report

You have:

  • Master's degree in Law is required.
  • A first-level university degree in Law with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in researching, reviewing and analysing information and documentary evidence concerning international criminal law or human rights law violations, including in relation to the Syrian conflict.
  • Experience in legal research and drafting is required.
  • Experience in conducting extensive research and analysis in international criminal cases or human rights investigations is required.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.

Result of Service To provide legal and analytical support to assist in the completion of a time-sensitive report to support proceedings in competent jurisdictions, completing the described duties and outputs within set deadlines.

Work Location Remotely. Two trips to Geneva at start and end of contract may be expected, for orientation meetings

Duties and Responsibilities This position is within the Collections and Analysis Section (CAS) of the International Impartial and Independent Mechanism to Assist in the Investigation and Prosecution of Persons Responsible for the Most Serious Crimes under International Law Committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011 (IIIM), located in Geneva, Switzerland. Under the supervision of the designated Legal Officer, the purpose of the individual contractor position is to assist in completing a time-sensitive report to be shared with competent jurisdictions in relation to one of the IIIM's priority strategic lines of inquiry. The individual contractor will be required to conduct extensive factual and legal analysis, conduct targeted research; produce first drafts of aspects of the report; and assist in finalizing the report by checking sources.

Duties and responsibilities will include: - Conducting legal research on particular areas of international law, as needed. - Performing fact analysis and tagging, as needed. - Reviewing extensive documentation, other material within the IIIM Repository and prior analyses; identifying and synthesizing additional relevant materials; conducting targeted research; compiling relevant data and drafting factual summaries. - Producing first drafts of aspects of the report; and - Assisting in finalizing the completed report.

Qualifications/special skills Master/Advanced degree in Law is required. A first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in Law with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Languages The working languages of the Secretariat are English and French. For this position fluency in English is required and a knowledge of Arabic is desirable
