Result of Service

Deliverables and support provided by the consultant will help UNEP achieve its commitments under the agreed workplans with the Ministry of Environment of Japan and the United States Environment Protection Agency in addressing lead pollution in Africa and Asia-Pacific regions through pilot activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Supporting UNEP conducting piloting activities in addressing lead pollution in Africa and Asia-Pacific regions.

The consultant will support as per the timeline indicated above, including the following tasks: Addressing lead pollution in Asia-Pacific region • Gathering relevant information and preparing the Global baseline information report on the regional differences in sources and exposure to lead, as well as on sectoral approaches in addressing lead pollution. • Providing technical and logistical support for organizing a face-to-face meeting for sharing the progress of the global baseline information report and exploring the feasibility of transitioning towards a holistic, sectoral approach to address lead pollution for countries in Asia-Pacific region, in the context of the Asia-Pacific Regional Forum on Health and Environment (APRFHE). • Preparing a brief report and ppt presentation on the outcomes of the consultation conducted in Asia-Pacific region the feasibility of transitioning towards a holistic, sectoral approach to address lead pollution. • Providing technical support in developing/selecting of a strategy/set of measures for one of priority lead sources identified by a selected country and for development of a roadmap for its implementation. Addressing lead pollution in Africa region • Providing technical and logistical support for organizing two online consultations on exploring the feasibility of transitioning from addressing a single lead source e.g. lead in paint or lead in gasoline to an integrative lead sources management approach for English and French speaking countries in Africa region. • Preparing a brief report and ppt presentation on the outcomes of the consultations conducted in Africa region regarding the feasibility of transitioning from addressing a single lead source e.g. lead in paint or lead in gasoline to an integrative lead sources management approach.

Qualifications/special skills

Master’s degree or equivalent in a field related to environment/health/natural sciences. Two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the university degree. A comprehensive understanding of international and regional regulations related to hazardous substances and lead pollution, including familiarity with UNEP guidelines and tools, is required. Strong communication skills are required for preparing comprehensive reports and documentation, including clear and concise presentations of findings, recommendations, and progress reports. Work experience in implementing environmental projects involving various partners, clients and stakeholders is desirable.

Languages

English - Fluent written and spoken English is required.

Additional Information

Knowledge of another UN language would be an asset.
