Job Overview: The vision of the IRC Seattle Youth Program is that youth from refugee and immigrant backgrounds will have the skills and resources necessary to pursue a future of opportunity. The Youth Program works towards this vision by providing educational and enrichment opportunities to help school-aged youth from refugee and immigrant backgrounds catch up on missed education, adjust to their new school, accelerate English language development, and build positive relationships in the school and community. The Lead Elementary ELL Educator will specifically support the expansion of programs for newcomer students through curriculum development and facilitation of programs including push-in and pull-out support in schools during the school-day, after school, mid-winter break and summer learning and enrichment programs. As the Lead Elementary ELL Educator, you will have the unique opportunity to partner with the youth program team supporting newcomer youth as they develop the skills, resources, and knowledge to pursue their future goals and dreams.

Major Responsibilities:

- Support IRC’s Youth Program Coordinators and Specialists in the planning, preparation and facilitation of the afterschool Ready to Read! program, Child Friendly Space, break camps, and summer learning and enrichment programs for elementary students. - Support Youth Program Coordinator and Specialists with curriculum development and lesson planning, designing lessons that can be scaffolded to meet the needs of various levels of English language development. - Plan and lead the facilitation of afterschool and summer programs, large and small-group activities and lessons including math, literacy, art, recreation, and social and emotional learning. - Provide 1:1 support to students needing more individualized instruction. - Facilitate effective processes including attendance records, inclusive and trauma informed classroom management, distribution and collection of learning materials, and COVID-related health and sanitation procedures.

- Facilitate program outreach and enrollment by calling or meeting in-person with families at school buildings or events to explain IRC’s youth programs, answer questions, and assist families in completing program enrollment forms.

- Provide academic support and guidance for newcomer students at partnering schools during the school day by either pulling out students for small group instruction and tutoring, or pushing in to classes to provide support during large group classroom instruction.

- Create safe and healing learning spaces and build supportive relationships with newcomer students utilizing a trauma informed approach in order to support students’ academic and social and emotional development.

- Participate in program meetings, staff development activities, and fully engage as a member of the IRC team. - Comply with all policies, procedures, and protocols of the agency, including COVID Health and Safety guidelines for in-person instruction. - Other related duties as assigned.

Indirect Reporting: Youth and Education Program Manager and Youth Program Specialist

Position directly supervises: Interns, volunteers

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Teaching, Child Development or other relevant field or equivalent experience. - 2+ years’ experience working with elementary age students; classroom teaching experience or experience in tutoring or academic enrichment programs (i.e. summer or day camps, youth groups, after school programs, sports/recreation programs or clubs). - Experience working with multi-lingual students. - Written and spoken proficiency in English, and professional proficiency in relevant languages highly desired (Ukrainian, Dari, Pashto, Arabic, Swahili, Kinyarwanda, etc.). - Cross cultural experience; connection and experience working with communities from refugee and/or immigrant backgrounds. - Experience utilizing online platforms such as Zoom and Teams, and Microsoft Office Suite. - Committed to anti-racism and continual learning and growth.

- Flexible and adaptable to changing program and student needs. - Team player willing to provide support to other staff and students.

Working Environment:

- Primarily working in elementary schools in Tukwila, Auburn, and Federal Way. Some remote or office work required at IRC’s office in SeaTac, WA. Flexible to shift to virtual programming if necessary. - Occasional evening or weekend activities as needed. - Need access to reliable high-speed internet from remote office or ability to work from IRC’s office in SeaTac. - Need access to reliable transportation to travel and work off-site at programs in schools in Tukwila and Auburn. - Typical schedule will be Monday - Friday 9:00 – 5:00.
