- Knowledge on the use of computer
- Able and willing to travel to remote areas where activities supported by Global Fund are being implemented
- Able to communicate in English
- Excellent knowledge of Myanmar

ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING
Malaria Team, WHO Myanmar has been supporting in planning and implementing malaria control/elimination programme. Malaria control programme embarked to malaria elimination in 2016 with the aim to eliminate P. falciparum malaria by 2023 and all human malaria by 2030. WHO is implementing donor funds through supporting field staff to the national programme.Malaria microscopy is the gold standard for malaria diagnosis in elimination settings. Lab Technician is essential to assist the malaria microscopist in performing malaria diagnosis and malaria slide bank. Inadequate human resources and capacity of the national staff in the area of PCR tests and malaria microscopy is a challenge. To strengthen the capacity of the national staff and implement the PCR test and malaria microscopy, and slide bank, WHO is to field ‘Lab Technician’ based in VBDC Office, Gyogone, Yangon as SSA mechanism. The Lab Technician will be supported by extrabudgetary sources. The incumbents will work under the direct supervision of Scientist (Malaria Control) and overall guidance of the WHO Representative to Myanmar, and in close collaboration with the programme to perform the following tasks mentioned in the section below. The positions are initially for one-year 2022. The extension for 2023 is contingent to performance and successful acquisition of funds beyond 2022.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Need assessment, planning, training, and QA/QC of malaria microscopy
- In collaboration with the Central programme Team, conduct PCR tests and malaria microscopy at the Gyogone Laboratory in Yangon.
- Assist the Programme officials and WHO National Malaria Coordinator, in the setting up of malaria slide bank.
- Manage and organize efficiently the laboratory material/equipment and storage conditions. Performing minor maintenance and cleaning of the biomedical equipment, waste disposal following user manual and protocols.
- Provide technical assistance in the conduct of quality assurance on malaria microscopy as per protocol developed jointly by programme and WHO.
Coordination and reporting
- Organized the data collection system of laboratory results and ensuring proper reporting and registrations of the sample result.
- Provide inputs related to PCR and malaria microscopy that will help the programme officials in the preparation and timely submission of quality-assured reports to the Principal Recipient. Participate in quarterly coordination meetings at WHO in Yangon and/or at Central programme team.
- The incumbent will closely coordinate with WHO Scientist (Malaria Control) to receive timely technical guidance to support the Programme.
- The incumbent will submit a monthly work and travel plan and activity report or any other report as required to officials from programme and WHO Scientist (Malaria Control).
- Submit monthly activity report and quarterly assignment report to WHO Malaria Unit with a copy to programme officials. The report should be prepared in a format and substance that will be outlined by WHO Malaria Unit.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
WORK RELATIONS AND PARTNERSHIPS
The malaria team is working closely with programme and other partners supporting malaria control and elimination activities. The incumbent is expected to have working skills in a team and communication skills to manage the partnership. Most importantly the incumbent needs to work closely with the WHO team members, National and other Field Project Coordinators, Data Assistants and officials.
IMPACT OF FUNCTIONS
The function plays a key role with respect to the clients served through the delivery of technical support on malaria microscopy and reporting in a collaborative approach.
