- Experience in working with humanitarian populations is desired.
- Proficiency in conducting laboratory tests and interpreting results.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team and collaborate with other healthcare professionals.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to work under pressure in a challenging environment.
- Fluency in English and Swahili; Kirundi is an added advantage.

Background/IRC Summary:
Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to serious humanitarian crises around the world and helps victims to survive and rebuild their lives.
For over half a century, Tanzania has been a country of asylum, hosting one of the largest refugee populations in Africa. Currently, the country hosts approximately 287,903 Burundian and Congolese refugees, many of whom arrived in 2015 as the crisis in Burundi increased. To date, refugees continue to co-exist with the host communities in Kigoma region expressing multiple reasons and needs. Within this context, IRC provides protection and basic assistance in the areas of Safety (comprises of Protection and Rule of Law, Women Protection and Empowerment, and Child Protection), Health (mental health and psychosocial support services and reproductive health), and Education.
Job Overview:
The Laboratory Technician will play a crucial role in the health programs in the Kigoma Region, ensuring the provision of accurate and timely laboratory services. The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for conducting various laboratory tests, maintaining equipment, and collaborating closely with the Clinical Officer and other healthcare professionals.
Major Responsibilities: Key Areas
Laboratory Services
- Perform various laboratory tests including but not limited to hematological, biochemical, microbiological, and parasitological tests as per standard operating procedures - Ensure proper collection, handling, and processing of specimens - Maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring calibration, cleanliness, and functionality - Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents, and request replenishment when necessary. - Ensure compliance with quality control procedures and standards. - Document and maintain accurate records of laboratory tests and results
Collaboration
- Collaborate with the Clinical Officer and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated patient care. - Provide support and guidance to clinical staff regarding laboratory investigations and interpretation of results.
Training
- Participate in training sessions for laboratory procedures and protocols. - Provide on-the-job training to health staff as appropriate
Report Writing
Assist in preparing and presenting laboratory reports for internal and external stakeholders.
Key Working Relationships:
- Position Reports to: Clinical Officer In Charge - Position directly supervises: Assistant Lab workers (Incentive workers) - Other Internal and/or external contacts: Clinical Officer, Enrolled and Registered Nurse, Pharmacy Team
Qualifications
- Diploma or Certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology. - Registered with the Medical Laboratory Practitioners Council of Tanganyika. - Over two (2) years of working experience in a medical laboratory setting. - Knowledge of laboratory procedures, equipment, and quality control standards. - Experience in working with humanitarian populations is desired.

Environment:
Security level yellow - The situation in most of the country is calm. Some parts of Kigoma region experience insecurity-highway banditry.
