Laboratory Specialist

Overview

Lead and optimize laboratory training and procedures for food quality assurance and AMR surveillance.

You have:

• Advanced university degree in microbiology, molecular biology, biological sciences or a related field.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in veterinary and/or public health.
• Proficiency in English (C-level).
• National of Mongolia or resident of the country with a valid work permit.

Organizational Setting

FAO Mongolia works with the vision "to be a leading, credible and responsive partner in ensuring food and nutrition security of the population". The office has been coordinating projects and programmes in research, capacity building, natural resources management, technology transfer, food and agriculture policy, livestock production systems management, emergency and post crisis management, forestry information, statistics, food security and nutrition, emergency response operations, crop production system management, and food quality and safety.

Reporting Lines

The incumbent will work under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Mongolia, will report to the FAO Representative in Mongolia, under the technical supervision of a Lead Technical Officer (LTO) and in collaboration with the MPTF project coordinator.

Technical Focus

• Capacity building in AST methodologies • Development of standardized laboratory procedures and MNS standards • AMR surveillance in the food chain • Quality assurance in laboratory testing

Tasks and responsibilities

The incumbent will work in close collaboration with FAOR office and Project Management Units (PMU) on implementation of relevant policies, procedures and practices. Specifically, he/she will:

• Review existing AST laboratory protocols and procedures, including disc diffusion and MIC methods. • Develop training modules covering sampling techniques, AST methodologies, result interpretation, and quality control measures for national and local laboratories. • Conduct hands-on training sessions, including practical demonstrations and simulations. • Prepare training reports documenting key activities, outcomes, and recommendations. • Develop MNS serial standards for AST in compliance with MNS/ISO17025 accreditation requirements. • Lead pilot AMR surveillance in the food chain. • Perform other related tasks as required.
