Organization Background

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is one of the world's leading crisis response agencies, providing life-saving assistance and supporting recovery and reconstruction for people affected by war and natural disasters. Active in public health, education, livelihoods, women's empowerment, youth development, and protection and promotion of rights, IRC assists people from harm to home.

The IRC has been working in Uganda since 1998 supporting refugees, vulnerable host communities and various institutions in the country notably the government, community-based organizations, civil society, and the private sector. Currently, the IRC in Uganda has a presence across six sub-regions and six refugee settlements, implementing programming in the sectors of health, protection, and rule of law (PRoL), women’s protection and empowerment (WPE), economic recovery and development (ERD), education and livelihoods. IRC Uganda also implements cross-cutting programming focused on systems strengthening and accountability to affected persons. As part of IRC Uganda’s strategic ambitions, the IRC works closely with local actors, including civil society organizations, local non-governmental organizations, local and national governments, among others, to strengthen their capacity and with intentions of transferring more resources for locally-led implementation and support to our clients.

Job Overview

Under the supervision and guidance of the laboratory technician, the laboratory Assistant will coordinate and perform tasks and activities in several areas of the clinical laboratory. Each day a certain Laboratory Assistant will be assigned specific areas of responsibility within the scope of the job as outlined herein. Depending upon the area of responsibility within the scope of the job as outlined herein. Depending upon the area of responsibility the Laboratory Assistant will monitor the status of the workflow of the tasks involved and shall prioritize each task, coordinate performance and report frequently and directly to the lab technician about completion of tasks.

Major Responsibilities

• Oversees specimen collection activities.

• Oversees specimen referral activities.

• Oversees laboratory requisition preparation for outpatients.

• Oversees training for new Phlebotomists.

• Processes sample tests in some technical areas.

• Updating of manuals outlining phlebotomy procedures and specimen requirements.

• Workload recording.

• Supply / equipment inventory ordering.

• Chemical hygiene and / or lab safety procedures.

Qualifications

• Must have a certificate in laboratory from a recognized institution.

• Must be registered and licensed with the Allied Health Professional Council

• At least 2 years of work experience, with field experience in providing services to refugees.
