ABOUT

JIPS is an interagency service set up in 2009 and dedicated to bringing governments, displaced persons, host communities and national and international actors together to collaborate towards durable solutions for internal displacement. JIPS is a globally recognized neutral broker that supports collaborative and responsible approaches to data collection and use in internal displacement contexts, with a particular focus on developing national capacities, protracted displacement, durable solutions, and urban displacement.

This is done through technical and collaboration support to field partners, by providing quality guidance and hands-on tools, and by advancing global discourse towards sound global action and standards. JIPS is overseen by an Executive Committee comprised of the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), and the Office of the Special Rapporteur on the human rights of IDPs.

JIPS is a dynamic team that prioritises innovation, partnership, and professional development. It functions according to a set of principles that guide both the content and approach to its work being collaborative, human-centred, complementary, ethical, and transparent.

OVERALL PURPOSE

Under the supervision of JIPS’ Head of Knowledge Sharing & Communications, the Communications Officer plays a key role in implementing and advancing JIPS’ content and editorial strategy, as per its communication and overall organisational strategy 2021-2023, and in promoting JIPS’ mission and work more broadly speaking with key global and regional audiences. The position holder will work very closely with the KS&C team as well as cross-unit with JIPS subject matter experts, as required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Content generation: Implements and helps leverage JIPS’ content and narrative strategy through high-quality products that effectively communicate JIPS’ expertise and achievements in line with its branding and positioning, and that elevate its profile with key audiences at the global and regional levels. Uses storytelling techniques and works with JIPS’ Data Storytelling Officer to explore creative ways to tell the stories in the complex, technical and often sensitive aspects of JIPS’ work in a powerful way. Works to bring in diverse voices including from country partners, and to tailor content to key audiences and channels. Explores new approaches/content formats to communicating about forced displacement and displacement data.
  • Knowledge sharing & publications: Contributes to research and preparation of knowledge sharing products. Manages JIPS’ yearly editorial planning and the development of JIPS’ news, technical pieces and tools, in close collaboration with JIPS’ Head of KS&C and subject matter experts. This includes defining publication schedules, editing articles/texts, coordinating contributions from different authors, supervising external suppliers (e.g. translators, graphic designers, printers), providing input on design and format, and ensuring high-quality products in a cost-effective and timely manner. If required, this may also include facilitating the relationship with a peer-reviewed journal or research body for the implementation of a joint knowledge product.
  • Websites: Manages the maintenance and updating of JIPS’ websites (jips.org, JET, etc.) and contributes new ideas to continuously improve their usability and relevance for key audiences. Support the websites redesign project, planned for 2022.
  • Newsletter: Manages the design, production and timely dissemination of JIPS’ bi-monthly newsletter to effectively drive outreach and visibility, engagement with and use of its products and services.
  • Social media: Manages and elevates JIPS’ social media presence (mainly Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube), keeping the platforms up-to-date and tailoring the language to each channel to effectively drive engagement. Makes active use of content that stays relevant over time, and enhances partnerships by sharing/curating their content in line with JIPS’ priorities.
  • Events: Supports the implementation of JIPS’ in-person and virtual events, including drafting invitations, promoting the event on JIPS’ social media channels, assisting on logistics, creating subsequent news pieces, and any other tasks as needed.
  • Monitoring, evaluation, assessment, and learning: Measures impact regarding outreach and engagement on JIPS’ digital channels (websites, data stories, social media, newsletter) using Google Analytics and Search Console as well as other tools as relevant. Regularly shares analysis and insights with JIPS’ KS&C team, and works to continuously improve results and expand impact.
  • Other: Keeps track of trends and good practices, and actively participates as a team player, showing initiative and proactivity. Provides administrative support and assists with any other tasks in the KS&C unit and cross-unit support as needed

QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES

QUALIFICATIONS

  • University degree or the equivalent professional qualification in communications, data journalism, public information, or a related field.
  • Minimum 4-5 years of relevant experience in communications for an international organisation

EXPERIENCE

  • Proven track record in delivering accurate and impactful editorial copy that effectively combine data, narrative and visual techniques
  • Proven ability to analyse complex information from different sources and synthesise it into concise, jargon-free articles, whitepapers, and other editorial outputs
  • Experience combined with a genuine interest in working on forced displacement and at the humanitarian-development intersection, in the non-profit and/or international sector
  • Experience with editorial planning using different tools, and with digital content and social media management platforms (such as Wordpress, Hootsuite, etc.)
  • Experience with both in-person and virtual event implementation and related communications tasks

COMPETENCIES

  • Excellent communication, copywriting and -editing skills, including for the web and social media, plus strong interpersonal skills
  • Passion for communicating about complex and technical issues, and proven experience in storytelling especially related to forced displacement and displacement data
  • Excellent understanding of communications principles and content strategies across channels and audiences, including knowledge of current trends and techniques
  • A creative thinker with high attention to detail, devoted to crafting high-quality, engaging content for diverse communication channels and audiences ranging
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with a problem-solving approach and the capacity to “think outside the box”
  • Able to work independently and under time pressure while juggling multiple tasks

  • Knowledge of online platforms for collaborative working (such as Zoom, Webex, Microsoft Teams, etc.)

  • Effective and resourceful team player, able to liaise and communicate with colleagues at all levels of seniority and from different cultures and areas of expertise
  • Full professional proficiency in English, fluency in oral and written Spanish or French required; knowledge of another official UN language a plus
  • Knowledge of branding, visual communication, graphic design, data and information visualisation, and video production, as well as familiarity with design software (Adobe CC, etc.) desirable

SALARY AND CONDITIONS

The position is placed in Geneva, Switzerland with the Geneva Representation office. This position will be placed at Employment Band – H. DRC offers a competitive salary based on qualification and experience; approximate monthly gross salary is estimated to be around 5’600 CHF. DRC does not pay any additional allowances (schooling, housing etc.). DRC staff pay tax and social security according to Swiss law and health insurance.
