UNDP in Kenya is re-booting it’s communications approach, The Country Office (CO) communications assets need to therefore be constantly updated, amended, and created to ensure UNDP’s work is effectively disseminated and its brand values are maintained. The communication assets facilitate knowledge management and learning and support efforts of positioning UNDP in Kenya as the leading UN development agency and partner of choice.

He/she will be responsible for providing knowledge management, learning and communication support to the Devolution Project Team and Amkeni Wakenya including their implementing partners. Specifically, he/she will assist in translating project results into learning and knowledge management products and messages and other information materials such as project briefs, speeches, talking points, newsletters, and knowledge management products. The Associate will be responsible for designing publicity materials for the project, driving the knowledge management, learning and communication functions. He/she will also develop content for the projects for upload on the Country Office website and social media platforms. He/she will also work with the projects implementing partners to develop content for their websites and social media platforms. The Associate will work closely with the Joint Programme Monitoring and Evaluation Officer and the Amkeni Wakenya Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist to continually translate the project outputs and results into learning and knowledge products. The Associate must be client and results-oriented.

The Knowledge Management, Learning and Communication Associate work in close collaboration with the projects’ implementing partners (national and county governments, the civil society), media, the other two Joint Programme UN Agencies (UNICEF and UN Women), development partners and other actors highlighting the projects’ achievements within the UNDP Country Office framework:

  1. Design and implementation of the devolution projects and Amkeni Wakenya’s’ learning, knowledge management and communications action plan to support project implementation and sharing of results with key stakeholders including donors.
  2. Development and implementation of a devolution project and Amkeni Wakenya’s knowledge management and publication/communication strategy action plan.
  3. Generation of devolution projects’ and Amkeni Wakenya’s content for the Country Office and implementing partners websites, social media platforms, databases and knowledge management and learning systems.
  4. Support efforts towards facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing across project components, other UNDP projects, implementing partners and the three UN Agencies. Reporting directly to UNDP Devolution Project Manager and the Project Manager Amkeni Wakenya, Knowledge Management, Learning and Communication Associate will perform the following duties and responsibilities within the two projects:

Design and implementation of devolution projects’ learning, knowledge management and communications action plan focusing on achievement of the following results: • Preparation and conduct of knowledge management and communications need assessments for the devolution/Amkeni Wakenya projects’ implementing partners and work with the teams and stakeholders to determine the project information/updates requirements. • Working closely with the projects’ M&E officer/M&E Specialist, generate information from M&E reports for translation into knowledge management products for various audiences such as donors, implementing partners, media and for country office website. • Work with the projects’ implementing partners’ communication teams to organize public discussions, press conferences, briefing sessions, op-eds, interviews etc. about the specific projects • Under devolution programme, he/she will work closely with the Council of Governors (CoG) and other implementing partners to ensure all the projects-supported publications and other country office generated innovations are posted in the Maarifa Centre (CoG information database) for wider circulation, access and retention. • Maintaining website links on UNDP supported results (evidence) at the implementing partners’ websites for ease of Results-Oriented Analysis Report (ROAR) Reporting.
    • Create and develop branded products for high-visibility campaigns and outreach • Compile current news briefs on key devolution/democratic governance issues as covered by key conferences, workshops forums and local media. • Be a member of the UNDP Country Office Communication Team; Maintain a projects’ photo-library

  6. Provides support to the elaboration and implementation Projects (Devolution & Amkeni Wakenya) publications plan focusing on the achievement of the following results: • Provision of inputs and information on devolution issues for the elaboration of CO publications strategy and plan based on the corporate publications policy. • Support the development of publications, web articles, flyers, event banners, posters, project factsheets, brochures, social media share graphics/infographics, presentations and other • Identification of devolution sector storylines for publications and articles contributing to debates on key development issues. • Lead in the devolution projects’ translation/adaptation/rewriting of information received printing and dissemination of publications and audio-visual materials. Contact with designers, printers, and other suppliers to ensure timely and quality production, and Lead in the publication’s dissemination and collation of feedback for continuous improvement.
  7. Generation of devolution projects/Amkeni Wakenya’s content for the Country Office and implementing partners websites, social media platforms, databases and knowledge management and learning focusing on achievement of the following results: • Assistance in identifying and drafting success stories and compiling lessons learnt in collaboration with the projects (Devolution & Amkeni Wakenya) implementing partners, CSOs, national and county governments.
    • Providing projects updates to the Communication unit for online platforms and country office web sites as well as success stories, news updates and other information intended for public use. • Create social media infographics during each key moment as per the events calendar
  8. Support facilitation of knowledge building and learning across projects’ components, implementing partners and the three UN Agencies focusing on achievement of the following results. • Support efforts aimed at identifying and synthesizing of best practices and lessons learned directly linked to the projects (devolution project/Amkeni Wakenya) goals and activities. • Contribute to knowledge networks and communities of practice among the projects’ implementing partners and other country office projects. • Develop a module for incorporation and delivery during projects’ training and workshops on knowledge generation, documenting of success stories and best practices, dissemination etc for project visibility, information sharing and IPs capacity building; and • Perform any other tasks or duties as assigned by the Project Team

Results/expected outputs: • Monthly and quarterly Progress Report on supported activities in the two projects • Contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice increased

a similar position, providing knowledge management, learning and communication support to promote development project activities of international development organizations and the public sector. • Experience in devolution and working with civil society organizations in the democratic governance sector is an asset. • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.). • Experience in the development of quality and customized results-based knowledge management products • Experience in handling web-based management systems. • Experience in photography and use of high-resolution photos in generating high-quality knowledge products. • Experience in using graphic or design software (Adobe CS6 – Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro, Audition).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
