Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

COVID-19 has laid bare critical gaps in equality that have left millions of women and girls – particularly those who are most marginalized – behind. Gender equality is not just a goal: it is critical to the survival of the planet, the realization of the rights of all girls and women, and to building new economic and social systems that include, and work for, everyone. Aware of this critical time for gender equality and committed to building a more equal, inclusive and resilient post-pandemic world, UN Women, together with the governments of Mexico, France, and representatives of civil society, has initiated a global, innovative, multi-stakeholder platform: the Generation Equality Action Coalitions.

The Generation Equality Action Coalitions are global, innovative and multi-stakeholder platforms and is urgently needed now than ever before. The Generation Equality Action Coalitions are an extraordinary opportunity, both in approach and level of ambition, to accelerate progress, increase investments in gender equality and make concrete change. The Action Coalitions are mobilizing governments, civil society, international organizations, and the private sector to: catalyze collective action; spark global and local conversations among generations; drive increased public and private investment; and deliver concrete, game-changing results across generations for girls and women.

Six (6) specific themes are being addressed by the Action Coalitions including: i) Gender Based Violence; ii) Economic Justice and Rights; iii) Bodily autonomy and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR); iv) Feminist action for climate justice; v) Technology and innovation for Gender Equality; vi) Feminist movements and leadership. Action Coalitions Leaders work together to co-design a Global Acceleration Plan for Gender Equality on key areas that matter to women’s and girls’ lives, to strengthen international mobilization on the Action Coalition theme, and to define game-changing 5-year commitments in the action area they are leading. The Acceleration Plan for Gender Equality was launched during the Generation Equality Forum in Paris in July 2021.

During the same forum, over forty (40) billion USD commitments to the Global Acceleration Plan for Gender Equality were made by Action Coalitions leaders and commitment makers to support critical policy, programmatic and advocacy initiatives in the six (6) Action Coalitions areas. The work of the Generation Equality Forum is only getting started. Over the next five (5) years, the commitments made in the Generation Equality Forum in Paris must be translated into Action and concretely impact the lives of women and girls, in all of their diversity. To achieve this goal, UN Women, as the Secretariat of the Action Coalitions, will ensure the effective implementation of the commitments through the design and implementation of an accountability framework of a commitments approach and targeted engagement efforts.

In this context, UN Women is hiring a Knowledge Management & Content Development Consultant to assist the Strategic Coordination and Operations Unit with knowledge management, internal and partner communications, events preparation, and writing assignments for the Action Coalitions and Generation Equality tasks.
