Duties and Responsibilities

  1. General Background

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

The Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP) is co-hosted by UNEP in partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). These organizations serve as the joint host of the GGKP Secretariat (www.greengrowthknowledge.org) on behalf of the GGKP Steering Committee (UNEP, GGGI, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and the World Bank). The GGKP is a global network of over 90 international organisations, research institutes and non- governmental organisations focused on promoting a green economy transition by:

  • identifying major knowledge gaps in green growth theory and practice and addressing these gaps by promoting collaboration and coordinated research; and

  • using world-class knowledge management and communication tools to provide practitioners, policymakers, and other experts with opportunities to access, share, and utilize green growth policy analysis, guidance, information, and data.

GGKP has received funding from the EU to support the enhancement of circular economy knowledge generation, management and sharing globally over a period of three years (EU Funded Action “Accelerating the global transition to a green and circular economy”). To achieve this objective GGKP aims to ensure a clear alignment between those stakeholders that, 1) produce knowledge, 2) provide enabling policy environment and financial supports, and 3) those that are the end-users of the same. At the core of GGKP’s related activities will be the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) based systems to improve the collation, curation and synthesising of knowledge resources, and access to knowledge that is adapted to the needs of individual end-users. GGKP will also enhance its current range of supports to organizations and projects requiring an online presence through GGKP hosted websites/sub-sites and/or AI supported functions for their knowledge hubs.

A consultant is sought to provide support to GGKP’s knowledge management team on adding new knowledge resources to the GGKP knowledge libraries and assisting the set-up and maintenance of GGKP platforms, sub-sites and hosted websites.

  1. Purpose and Scope of Assignment

Falling under the remit of GGKP’s EU funded circular economy scope of work, the purpose of this assignment is to:

  1. Assist GGKP in monitoring knowledge resources aligned with GGKP's focus areas, and drafting and uploading short summaries of selected knowledge resources to the GGKP knowledge libraries. During the initial phase of the assignment this work will be carried out directly by the consultant and then over time, as AI-based knowledge management systems are introduced, the consultant will partially transition to quality checking AI produced outputs. As part of this activity the consultant will also be responsible for overseeing the pipeline of knowledge resources, ensuring the quality of the Content Management System and providing training to new GGKP team members and partners on GGKP’s backend knowledge management system operations.

  2. Assist GGKP in managing the content of its platforms’ webpages, and setting up and maintaining knowledge-based websites and sub-sites (referred to as initiative pages on the GGKP platforms) for external organisations and which are hosted through GGKP’s main knowledge management infrastructure. This work will involve adding content to webpages, reviewing and testing new webpage functionalities and training website / sub-site owners on operational backend functions.

The specific tasks under this assignment will therefore include:

  • Monitoring knowledge resources aligned with GGKP's focus areas through such mediums as partner email newsletters, event pages and social media channels, as well as direct engagement with GGKP partners;
  • Drafting and uploading short summaries of knowledge resources;
  • Tagging relevant knowledge resources according to relevant sector, theme, country and platform taxonomies;
  • Supervising the knowledge pipeline and ensuring the quality of the Content Management System;
  • Providing training to new GGKP members and partners on backend knowledge management system
