This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Technical Specialist Digital Finance in Niger or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Knowledge Management and Communication Specialist will:

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of a communication strategy for the programme in Niger and Gabon;
  • Help the country teams to prepare communications with Governments and partners;
  • Identify and describe the best practices promoted by UNCDF among target populations including smallholders, women, young people, financial institutions, incubators and fintechs, SMEs, energy solutions companies, Mobile Operators, Banks and other providers;
  • Describe and analyze the effects of actions implemented in the lives of target populations;
  • Effectively gather and disseminate the information generated by UNCDF's interventions to the targeted audience,
  • Draft knowledge of best practices and lessons learned to be shared with different stakeholders
  • Facilitate the communication of UNCDF's documented experiences and successes in national and international media through articles and reports (social networks, newspapers, national and international channels);
  • Produce capitalization documents to highlight the experiences and best practices identified on UNCDF's interventions in Niger and Gabon primarily and as needed in the region;
  • Participate/supervise learning/research topics;
  • Contribute to the visibility of UNCDF's actions and inspire similar future projects;
  • Organize periodic meetings to visit UNCDF's achievements for the benefit of technical and financial partners;
  • Participate in project meetings, as required
  • Perform all other tasks to be entrusted by management.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

  • Applicants should have a minimum Master degree in one of the following areas: information science, communication, journalism, international relations, sociology or any other related discipline (mandatory).

Required experience:

60 Months

Experience remark:

  • Have at least 5 years of proven experience in Information Technology, Database Management and Communications; including writing and editing communication products, social media posts, newsletters (mandatory)
  • At least 3 years of experience in carrying out missions related to participatory communication and/or capitalization of experiences would be an asset;
  • Good control of social media (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook) and data analytics tools is mandatory
  • Knowledge of international organizations would be an asset;
  • Knowledge and passion on how digital financial inclusion and digital payments are helping to advance progress towards sustainable development goals are desirable. This includes a good understanding of key players, opportunities, and challenges.
  • Previous work in Niger or Gabon would be an asset.
  • Previous experience with UN agencies would be an asset;
  • Basic graphic design and video editing skills are an advantage.
