Result of Service The work of the individual contractor will contribute to the successful implementation of activities under the UNCTAD Ocean Economy Programme specifically by supporting consultations, data gathering, analysis and dataset building, and in the provision of inputs for the TED Branch.

Duties and Responsibilities The Trade, Environment, Climate Change and Sustainable Development (TED) Branch of the Division on International Trade and Commodities of UNCTAD assists developing countries in strengthening their capacity to design and implement mutually supportive trade, environment, climate change and sustainable development objectives in development strategies at all levels.

Within the TEB Branch, the Oceans Economy Programme is expanding its current Ocean Trade database (2021) to cover trade in ocean-based services and to develop a series of appropriate and automatic trade and economic indicators for the dataset. It is also undertaken novel research on the fisheries sector and energy transition with the purpose of reduction/neutralisation of their emissions to net zero carbon and other GHG gasses emissions and/or zero emissions and in developing countries.

Under the supervision of the Project Officer, in implementing these activities, the consultant will perform the following duties:

1. Support the update and expansion of the Ocean Trade database (2021) to cover trade in ocean-based services and to develop a list of automatic trade and economic indicators for the dataset that could be used for future UNCTAD and partners research, all in cooperation with UNCTAD’s statistical Unit. 2. Support data and evidence research on emissions, available options, designs, and technologies for a smooth energy transition of the fisheries sector in developing countries with the purpose of reduction/neutralisation of their emissions to net zero carbon and other GHG gasses emissions and/or zero emissions and in developing countries. 3. Produce an analytical note on trends on ocean-based sectors based on UNCTAD database with data from 2019-2021 once available. 4. Support the TED Branch Ocean Economy and Fisheries programme in any data or analytical inputs as requested.

Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: An advanced university degree, Master, in trade, political economy, philosophy, development studies, science, environmental studies, or related field. Experience: 2 year of work experience on trade, development economics, environmental affairs, research, or business management. Practical experience on the ocean economy is an advantage. Previous experience with United Nations agencies is desirable. Language: Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations Official language is an advantage.
