The Economic Research and Statistics Division of the WTO is looking for a Junior Research conomist with experience in economic modelling to take up a six month short-term contract (with possibility for extension with five months, subject to budget approval),

The selected candidate is expected to start his/her contract on 1 February 2024, for six months, until 31 July 2024.

General Functions

Under the supervision of a counsellor in the Economic Modelling and Quantitative Analysis Section of the Economic Research and Statistics Division, the candidate will conduct economic research and have the following tasks:

1. Provide econometric inputs and inputs from the academic literature for simulation work with the WTO Global Trade Model.

2. Conduct simulations with the WTO Global Trade Model on trade policies and/or on trade and climate change (for example on data policies, carbon pricing and the spillover effects of decarbonisation policies).

3.Provide support with policy work on trade and climate change.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Completion of Masters in economics or related field. A PhD in economics or related field or being close to finalization of a PhD is an asset.

Knowledge and Skills:

Technical knowledge and skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of modern econometric methods, ideally in trade (such as gravity modelling).
  • Profound knowledge of computable general equilibrium (CGE) models, new quantitative trade models, and/or climate change models (integrated assessment models).
  • Ability to work with modelling software (GEMPACK or GAMS)
  • Good economic intuition and good economic writing skills.

Behavioural skills:

  • Ability to work in a team and under pressure.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.

Work Experience:

Two years of relevant experience of which at least one year in economic modelling and simulation, which may include experience gained in an academic institution (during a PhD).

Languages:

An excellent command of English, both oral and written, is required.
