Contract

This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Nigeria faces several security challenges as the country is the scene of widespread violence, criminality and outright insurgency, such as Boko Haram in the North East or the Farmers/Herders conflict in the Middle Belt, armed robbery and kidnapping for ransom. Women’s role in the conflict has been overlooked and their capacity under-utilized, leaving untapped an incredible tool for transformative change and sustainable peace, as women are often seen only as victims of conflicts that need to be protected rather than agents of change for peace.

As part of its flagship program on Women, Peace and Security, (WPS) UN Women is currently supporting the Government of Nigeria to meet its commitments on UNSCR 1325 through the development and implementation of Nigeria’s National Action Plan (NAP) and State Action Plans on Women, Peace and Security. With support from the Governments of Norway and Germany, UN Women is implementing WPS Programme in some states of Nigeria, designed to enhance women participation in conflict prevention, resolution, mediation and peacebuilding processes, at all levels; improve public perception on the role of women in peace and security; and enhance the capacity of government institutions, legislature, judiciary and security agencies to implement and institutionalize provisions of UNSCR 1325 in policies and operational procedures. Nigeria is a key regional player in West Africa, and accounts for about half of West Africa’s population, with an approximate population of over 200 million, with women constituting about 50%. The country is a multi-ethnic and culturally diverse federation which consists of 36 states and Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. The country is viewed as a multinational state, as it is inhabited by over 500 ethnic groups, of which the three largest are the Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba; these ethnic groups speak over 500 different languages and are identified with wide variety of cultures. The official language is English. The country has abundance of natural resources and serves as Africa’s biggest oil exporter. However, Nigeria is highly vulnerable to the global economic disruption caused by COVID-19, largely attributed to the pronounced decline in oil prices in global capital markets. Nationally, it is estimated that about 40 percent of Nigerians live below the poverty line, while another 25 percent are vulnerable. With COVID-19 pandemic, a significant number of the vulnerable population could fall into poverty. Inequality, in terms of income and opportunities, remains high and has adversely affected poverty reduction. The lack of job opportunities and corruption is at the core of the high poverty levels, inequality, and security challenges in the country. Attacks by the Boko Haram insurgent, farmer-herder crisis, armed robbery kidnapping for ransom are major security issues in different parts of the country. UN staff members are advised to stay only in assessed hotels. Assessed hotels list is available with Agency Security Focal Points.
