In recent years, the world has made remarkable strides advancing development. Yet, more than 700 million people still live-in extreme poverty. Children are disproportionately affected.
Poverty denies children their fundamental rights to nutrition, health, water, education, protection, shelter and more – diminishing their ability to build a better future for themselves and generations to come.
Although Uzbekistan has large youthful population and child poverty remains an issue. As a result of COVID 19, almost 800 000 children fell into low income category and despite the improvements in economy later in 2021, still number of children in low income families did not return to pre pandemic period. At the same time, recent war in Ukraine and sanctions on Russia create additional challenges to the families due to potential increase in food and energy as well as labour migration. For that reason, UNICEF works actively with government of Uzbekistan to define monetary and multidimensional child poverty and develop policy response. The UNV will support Social policy Team in child poverty data analysis and use of evidence for child poverty reduction.
