Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

In China, UN Women provides technical and financial assistance to innovative programmes and strategies for gender equality and women's empowerment. Economic Empowerment is one of key thematic areas that UN Women China team has been focusing on.

In March 2019, UN Women in partnership with the European Union launched the regional programme “Promoting Economic Empowerment of Women at Work in Asia – WeEmpower Asia” (2019-2022), to contribute to the economic empowerment of women, recognizing them as beneficiaries and partners of growth and development, by increasing commitment of private companies to gender equality and women´s empowerment and strengthening companies’ capacities to implement these commitments. China is one of seven countries of implementing the WeEmpower Asia program in the region.

One of key components of the WeEmpower Asia programme is to encourage private sector companies to sign and implement Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs). As of January 2021, 194 WEPs signatories from mainland China have committed to promote gender equality in the workplace, marketplace and community.

To enhance the WEPs implementation at enterprise level, a full package of training materials have been developed by the WEA regional programme team. Therefore, it is necessary to localize the training materials toconduct the trainings in China.

Building on the success of the 1st WEPs award last year, the WEA China team will hold the 2nd WEPs award to support WEPs promotion in private sectors in 2021 and showcase the best practices from the WEPs signagtories.

Another key component of this programme is to build an enabling business environment for women’s economic empowerment in the workplace and in the marketplace. WEA China team plan to conduct a research on gender equality and thedevelopment of new economy to provide evidence-based policy recommendations.
