Result of Service The WIN DRR initiative continues to grow and thrive with the WIN DRR Leadership Awards successfully presented at the APMCDRR. The Global Platform and APMCDRR promote and support women’s leadership and gender equality. A gender-responsive midterm review of the Sendai Framework is supported. Progress on the implementation of key UNDRR action plans and strategies including the UN SWAP Plan of Action, Gender Strategy, and UNDRR’s activities within the Action Plan to implement the recommendations from the UN Joint Study for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Expected duration The contract will be a retainer contract with two payments made, up to a maximum of 60 days over the contract. The contract will be a six-month contract starting 18 April 2022 and finishing 17 October 2022.

Duties and Responsibilities Background In line with the guiding principles of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, UNDRR has been expanding its work on gender-responsive disaster risk reduction and women’s leadership in disaster risk reduction, including through the flagship women’s leadership programme the Women’s International Network for Disaster Risk Reduction (WIN DRR). In addition to supporting and growing WIN DRR, ongoing efforts include mainstreaming gender at the Global Platform and Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction, implementing the recommendations from the UN Joint Study on Gender Equality, Women’s Empowerment and Leadership in DRR, and supporting a gender-responsive midterm review of the Sendai Framework.

Duty and responsibility The Junior Gender Consultant will be responsible for supporting UNDRR’s Gender Advisor to implement the WIN DRR initiative in the Asia-Pacific as well as UNDRR’s wider gender work. The Junior Gender Consultant will support all aspects of the Global Platform, the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR), and the midterm review of the Sendai Framework related to gender equality and women’s leadership. The consultant will also support the implementation of UNDRR’s gender strategy, UN-SWAP Plan of Action, and UNDRR’s activities in the Action Plan to implement the recommendations from the UN Joint Study for Disaster Risk Reduction.

This will include supporting: - Preparations related to gender equality and women’s leadership for the Global Platform and the APMCDRR. - Implementation of the WIN DRR initiative, including administration of the WIN DRR Leadership Awards, building membership, coordinating events and networking opportunities, drafting communications, etc., for the regional network as well as supporting the establishment of national networks. - UNDRR’s efforts to implement the recommendations of the UN joint study on gender equality and women’s empowerment and leadership in disaster risk reduction. - Ongoing research on human rights and gender equality in disaster risk reduction. - Implementation of the UNDRR UN-SWAP Plan of Action. Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: Graduate degree in international development, disaster risk reduction, environment, gender or another relevant field Experience: Experience working withing the UN system in the Asia-Pacific region an advantage. Experience of work in gender equality and women empowerment or related issues is desirable. Language: Fluency in English is required.
