This is a UNV National Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Youth contracts.

The position is located in ESCWA’s Cluster 2 on Gender Justice, Population and Inclusive Development. Specifically, the UNV will provide technical and non-technical support and input to the “Comprehensive Social Protection Reform Support Programme” as specified.

Under the supervision of the Senior Social Protection Officer, the UN Volunteer is responsible to perform the following functions:

• Contribute, in coordination with the lead expert and the project team, to the preparation of regional and/or national studies on social protection programmes in the Arab region or Arab countries, including but not limited to providing background research; • Support the lead expert and the project team in delivering data analysis to improve social assistance programmes and provide statistical input using statistical software such as R/RStudio; • Provide support for national level interventions, peer-to-peer arrangements and training workshops in consultation with identified target countries on quantitative analysis in support of evidence-based policy making for social assistance programmes, as required; • Provide support to substantive qualitative and quantitative research and data analysis, and contribution to the production of analytical and training materials, guidelines, action plans, online interactive tools and resource materials addressing various social protection issues in order to use the results of data analysis to improve social policy and social protection programmes; • Contribute to the development of a variety of studies, training materials, reports, background papers, etc. on a wide range of social protection topics; • Provide substantial input to meetings, conferences, seminars, workshops, etc. including the development of background documentation and presentations, keeping notes during meetings and preparing meeting reports, etc.; • Perform other duties to support ESCWA’s social protection team as required.

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. This position is based in ESCWA. National UN Volunteers are part of the malicious insurance plan. National UN Volunteers are expected to be culturally sensitive and adjust to the prevailing culture and traditions.

Conditions of Service for national UN Volunteers:

The contract lasts for the period indicated above with possibility of extensions subject to availability of funding, operational necessity and satisfactory performance. However, there is no expectation of renewal of the assignment. The applicable Volunteer Living Allowance is provided monthly to cover housing, utilities and normal cost of living expenses. Life, health and permanent disability insurance are included (health insurance for up to 3 dependents - except for UN Community Volunteers), as well as final repatriation (if applicable). Furthermore, in non-family duty stations that belong to hardship categories D or E, as classified by the ICSC, a Well-Being Differential (WBD) will be provided monthly.
