Program Overview

The Climate Program at WRI focuses on the technical, economic and social benefits of climate action, as well as the cost of inaction to support country transitions toward net zero emissions as outlined in the Paris Agreement, that is just, inclusive and leave no one behind. At the global level, we are working on several main areas: (1) stepping up national climate action while building economies that are cleaner, more equitable and offer better quality of jobs; (2) advancing international climate action through international cooperation on climate change to implement the Paris Agreement and make ambitious, equitable climate action a reality; (3) providing national governments, cities and companies with tools and resources to track progress toward their climate goals and strengthen accountability for existing climate commitments; and (4) tracking progress toward climate goals and supporting equity and development goals in the transition to a net zero emissions while ensuring that the transition will bring more just and equitable society.

At national level we work collaboratively with the government to design ambitious climate action plans that align with long-tem climate goals and national development plans through research, policymaking processes, and climate negotiations. We also support businesses, civil society, local governments, and other non-state actors as they pursue their own emissions-reduction and adaptation goals. We have built various climate tools that includes policy scenarios to inform good decision making and ensure accountability for existing commitments, as well as tracking progress on climate action. These tools are developed using system dynamics methodology that has been used by WRI Indonesia to support the Government of Indonesia by formulating low carbon development and green economy policy scenarios.

Job Highlight

The Junior Climate Modeler will provide support in developing, updating and advancing the integrated Climate-Economy model using system dynamics methodology, focusing on -but not limited to- specific sectors, including industries, agriculture and energy transition. The model is expected to be developed based on the existing Green Economy model which is previously developed by WRI Indonesia.

The Junior Climate Modeler will report to the Climate Manager while working closely and collaboratively with,other relevant team in WRI Indonesia in building a robust and comprehensive system dynamics model. This position will be based in Jakarta with office-flex working arrangement and possibility of doing travel when needed.

What You Will Do

Research (70%)

  • Review the existing Green Economy and Low Carbon Development system dynamics model to build comprehensive understanding on the structure, basic assumptions, and indicators of the model.
  • Continuously developing the robust Causal Loop Diagram (CLD) and the Stock Flow Diagram (SFD) of the existing model in accordance with system dynamics principles and standards.
  • Co-developing and advancing sectoral sub-model(s) in consultation with relevant sectoral experts within WRI Indonesia and/ or other experts and integrating the sub-model(s) with the main Low Carbon Economy Model.
  • Support in developing the baseline and policy scenarios of the low carbon economy that aligned with the 1.5C global target and net zero pathways.
  • Support in formulating robust, unbiased research and knowledge product that are designed to inform targeted audience on tackling issues of climate change, enhance climate ambitions, just transition and road to net zero pathways.
  • Contribute in designing Indonesia climate action target, long term strategies and national and subnational action on climate that is aligned with national development planning and the National Determined Contributions (NDC).
  • Conduct initial technical analysis of GHG emissions accounting, climate modeling, using the available science and methodology that is commonly used by international and national practices.
  • Support in preparing materials in the form of concept note, power point slides and/or talking points relevant with climate analysis.
  • Familiarize with WRI research standards and guidance as part of WRI Indonesia knowledge product development.

Project Management and Administrative Works (20%)

  • Support in organizing internal and external meetings, FGDs, workshops, conferences and dissemination activities under climate portfolio.
  • Participate in meetings and workshops, prepare relevant materials and taking notes/ report of the meetings.
  • Liaise administrative needs on climate project implementation and organize administrative paper works related to the projects (i.e. TORs, BTOR, etc).

Engagement and Outreach (10%)

  • Communicate research approaches and findings effectively to internal and external audience with manager’s guidance.
  • Support in providing engagement and outreach materials with key partners, ministries, subnational government, and donors.

What You Will Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science/ engineering, climate, math, engineering, or other related field.
  • Minimum of 2 (two) years of relevant work experience in systems analysis, policies scenarios and environment challenges
  • Proficient in Systems thinking and System Dynamics Modelling (e.g. familiar with Stella, PowerSim or Vensim)
  • Good understanding in analytics or Data Science, Numerical Methods, Technical Operations, and good in numbers
  • Ability to support discrete elements of research projects with manager guidance, e.g. systematically reviewing and synthesizing existing literature; collecting, cleaning, organizing, analyzing and visualizing data.
  • Business proficiency in Bahasa Indonesia and English on both verbal and written communications
  • Ability to communicate research approach and findings effectively to internal audiences with manager guidance, using compelling presentation skills
  • Ability to speak in an organized, clear and articulate manner for a wide range of audiences.
  • Critical thinking and well-structured research approach and methodology.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to track, share and visualize relevant information to assist decision making
  • An organized thinker who can juggle multiple, competing priorities
  • A self-motivated learner with a willingness and ability to take on new challenges, in particular on research areas.
  • Ability and willingness to travel when needed
  • Legally able to work in Indonesia

Performance Standard

  • Research activities are performed in timely and satisfactory manner under manager supervision.

Contract Arrangement

Full-time with fixed-term employment agreement for 9 (nine) months period with 3 (three) months of consultancy contract apply before the fixed-term employment agreement started.

Must have authorization to work in Indonesia to be eligible for this position.
