You have:

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world’s largest provider of humanitarian food assistance. On average, WFP reaches more than 80 million people with food assistance in 82 countries each year Around 14,000 people work for the organization, most of them in remote areas, directly serving the hungry poor.

ShareTheMeal is developed as the first pilot project of the WFP Innovation Accelerator, part of the Innovation and Knowledge Management Division, which aims to combine start-up lean thinking with non-profit projects to reduce food insecurity and malnutrition. This division reports to the Chief of Staff of WFP and seeks to create value through prioritizing and better harnessing innovative ideas, as well as scaling up transformative projects to a global level.

The ShareTheMeal app was launched in 2015 and currently has more than one million users. The team, located in Berlin, is focused on growing the user base and increasing engagement of existing users through marketing and communication initiatives as well as further developing the app to include new and innovative features.

ACCOUNTABITLITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Consultant, reporting to the Head of Engineering for the ShareTheMeal initiative, is expected to:

  1. Contribute to feature development.
  2. Learn to follow proper software development practices for the Android app:
    1. Design and implement Android solutions for ShareTheMeal
    2. Maintain and conduct bug-fixes of the Android code
    3. Write robust and maintainable tests
    4. Conduct code reviews and assessments
    5. Manage CI pipelines
    6. Monitor the Android app in the Production Environment
    7. Contribute to the Android Tech Strategy
    8. Document architecture/code decisions
  3. Help with innovations to improve the quality of our overall systems.
  4. Help with innovations to improve the velocity of our team.
  5. Work closely with the Product team to improve our products and features.

DELIVERABLES QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Completed contributions to the application, architecture and infrastructure.
  • Documentation and handover to Head of Engineering for ShareTheMeal

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree

Experience:

0-1 year of experience in Android development and creation of at least 1 android app

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of Kotlin or Java development
  • Knowledge of the basic principles of Android development
  • Interest in principles of clean code, test driven development, clean architecture and agile development processes
  • Analytical abilities, both quantitative and qualitative
  • Ability to interact with managers with maturity and tact
  • Mature interpersonal skills
  • Collaborative spirit able to liaise with a wide range of people at all levels and across different cultures and to act with credibility and diplomacy
  • Strong time management skills with an ability to plan, to juggle competing priorities successfully, and to work to tight deadlines
  • Self-motivated
  • Fully committed and motivated to achieve the aims of the World Food Programme

Languages:

High proficiency in written and spoken English
