Volunteering

Overview

Promote voluntary action and integrate UN mandate in communities as a UN Volunteer Prison Engineer/Architect.

You have:

• Advanced university degree in Law or equivalent required.
• At least 3 years of work experience in illegal/arbitrary detention issues or rule of law assistance highly desirable.
• Fluent in English and French is mandatory.
• Solid computer skills including proficiency in MS Office applications required.

Contract

This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Description of task

UN Volunteers are expected to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment as well as promote voluntary action through engagement with communities (urban & rural) during the course of their work. As such UN Volunteers should dedicate a proportion of their working week to the following in support of and in synergy with their primary role as UN Volunteer Prison Engineer/Architect

• Strengthen knowledge and understanding of the influence of voluntary action by the communities serviced directly or indirectly by MINUSMA by doing the following;
  • research of the subject matter,
  • develop knowledge of related non-profit community-based organizations and promote major issues of these organizations through voluntary actions that will influence development and peace-building initiatives.
  • undertake awareness-raising (promotion) activities in communities that will increase knowledge of issues of interest to MINUSMA and UNV mandate
  • Encourage communities to volunteer thoughts and actions to the development of their communities on the basis of core child protection issues of concern.
• Build relationships with a wide range (private/public) of Community Based Organizations, (CBO’s) Civil Society Organizations (CSO’s) - to support and/or participate in community
• driven voluntary activities and assist them to tell their stories to the World Volunteer Web site;
• Encourage, mobilize and support co-workers and fellow UN Volunteers to better understand the connections between MINUSMA mandate and volunteerism;
• Monitor on a continual basis the impact of integrating issues, activities and voluntary action at the community level;
• Contribute to articles/write-ups on the peace-building and development process and experiences from the above outlined activities and submit them to UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
• Promote and/or advise CSO’s and Citizens groups in the use of OV (online volunteering), and encourage relevant - groups to use OV whenever – technically possible.

Educational additional comments

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree, JD or equivalent) in Law, or Bar qualification or equivalent, in addition to a first-level degree, is required. A first-level university degree in Law in combination with other relevant academic qualifications and/or legal experience in the field of rule of law assistance may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience remark

At least 3 years of work experience preferably in the field of one or some of the following is highly desirable: illegal/arbitrary detention issues; assessment of factors in rule of law progress in the field (Rule of Law Indicators); informal or traditional justice and traditional/informal justice authorities;

Work experience embedded in, or as a mentor working alongside national justice institutions counterparts is preferred; Demonstrated diplomatic skills in relations with local national authorities, especially judges, prosecutors, bar associations and Ministry of Justice officials is an advantage;

Language skills

• English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
• French(Mandatory), Level - Fluent

Area of expertise details

Solid computer skills, including full proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word etc) and other IT applications and office technology equipment;
