BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

Every day, WFP works worldwide to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need.

The Business Transformation unit provides data services to UN World Food Programme programmes and operation in Kenya. These services include but not limited to, data analytics; supporting data driven decision making, and evidence-based reporting; enhancing data literacy; efficient and effective data pipelines; and storytelling with data using dashboards and visualization as required by WFP.

This position is expected to deliver quality data services in order to contribute to the effective delivery of services.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

  1. Conduct Data analytics and support the local requirement for data capabilities based on the maturity of data collection practices, the analytical requirement from the Business. This includes considerations of specific data sensitivity and country data protection law
  2. Design the technical solution, evaluating the applicability of existing solutions or the requirement for bespoke development in adherence to FIAF (Freedom in a Framework)
  3. Develop new analytical functionality based on the solution design and/or configuring existing data tools to align the local Business need
  4. Identify data gaps and data visualization needs for country operations and Identify new high-value datasets in the Kenya country office for inclusion in the data initiative and associated tools.
  5. Educate and inform internal and external audiences about the various tools and resources related to data in WFP.
  6. Support users to utilize data tools, troubleshooting incidences and escalating problems to the global help desk
  7. Support solution developers to improve applications and establish best practices for Data pipelines.
  8. Foster a culture of data-driven decision-making within the Country Office.
  9. Report progress and issues to the Head of Unit and the relevant CO data stakeholders through the Data

DELIVERABLES

  • An increased level of awareness, data literacy and skills in data visualization, and specifically the use of Tableau (and other recommended tools) at the Kenya country office, demonstrated by the number of trainings delivered.
  • Increased number of visits (+10%) from the Kenya country office to corporate data platforms and dashboards.
  • At least one data visualization, data use success story, or use case of Tableau (and other relevant tools) for data visualizations and decision making shared by the country office for each month on WFP internal communications platforms.
  • Monthly reports on existing needs/ data gaps at Kenya country office level to the Regional Data Coordinator
  • Increased awareness around the data agenda among Kenya country office senior management (heads of units, CD, DCD).
  • Implementation of Data Driven Decision-making and Evidence-based Reports

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • First University degree in one or more of the following disciplines: Information Systems, Computer Science or Information Technology is desirable.
  • Advanced certificate/diploma in Data Management, Data Science, Statistics, Information Management other relevant discipline will be an added advantage.

Language:

  • English

DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE

Experience:

  • At least 3 years of experience in software development/ programming and maintenance.
  • Experience in Data analytics and BI operations (Tableau preferred)
  • Experience in Data Pipelines and ETL operations
  • Experience in Storytelling with data, dashboarding and visualizations
  • Experience in database applications.
  • Experience in UML.
  • Experience in backend web development MVC Frameworks Experience in mobile application development.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Understanding of test-driven development (TDD).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to articulate complex and technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Mature judgment with strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Collaborative spirit able to liaise with a wide range of people at all levels
  • Excellent analytical and organisation skills
  • Working knowledge of R, Python, C#, Java and Node.JS or Django frameworks is a plus.
