Background Information - IPAS

Based in Copenhagen, Denmark, the UNOPS Integrated Practice Advice and Support (IPAS) serves all the regions and headquarters, primarily with advice and solutions to everyday implementation challenges. IPAS consists of a diverse team of subject matter experts in the six practice areas of HR, Administration, Legal, Finance, Procurement, Project Management and Infrastructure. IPAS has three main roles:

Support to operations in the field offices: IPAS provides timely advice and supports actively finding of solutions to everyday implementation challenges, based on policy and best practices. It also provides operational support in specific areas.

Business efficiency: IPAS recommends changes to policies, processes and operating standards based on the feedback and experience of the field offices. IPAS also ensures transparent and efficient project implementation, in line with policy and business needs.

Body of knowledge: IPAS contributes to research and coordination within the policy groups and project practitioners. It provides structured knowledge and subject matter expertise which is used across practice areas to provide coherent and tailored advice to the requesting offices.

Background Information - Job-specific

The IT Finance Intern reports to the Finance Specialist who provides broad supervision and guidance to the IPAS Finance, Treasury & Banking team.

The IT Finance Intern will support the team primarily with a project focused on payment connectivity via the TMS (Treasury Management System) for UNOPS’ bank accounts, as well as with a wide range of finance tasks, having hands-on daily work and being on the front line with internal and external parties such as colleagues in UNOPS’ local offices, ICT, banks and Kyriba (the TMS provider). The IT Finance Intern will also be responsible for delivering assigned tasks in a collaborative, timely and efficient manner.

At the end of this internship, the IT Finance Intern will have gained:

  • Experience with the processes and methods employed in user acceptance testing and penny value testing;
  • Experience in collaborating widely;
  • Project management skills;
  • Exposure to Finance and IT standards and activities;
  • Exposure to an international work environment;
  • Exposure to an operational arm of the United Nations;
  • An appreciation of UNOPS’ application of international best practice in finance across UNOPS global offices.

Functional Responsibilities

Summary of Key Functions 1. Support the payment connectivity project via the TMS by carrying out the following: - Liaise with UNOPS’ banks to obtain connection details and payment file specifications;

  • Liaise with ICT, UNOPS’ banks, Treasury and local offices for payment UAT and penny value tests;

  • Prepare and present status reports on payment connectivity project;

  1. Secondary functions (if time permits) include:

- Contribute to the team with innovative suggestions (e.g through data analytics) to improve operational efficiency in finance operations;

  • Contribute to the implementation of other team projects.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education:

  • Applicants must be enrolled for a university degree such as a Bachelor, Masters, or have graduated within three years prior to the application date of the internship;

  • The preferred candidate would have a degree in or be pursuing studies in the areas of IT, Business (Intelligence), Data Analytics, Computer Science, Finance, Accounting, Administration, Management, International Relations or other related areas.

Experience:

  • Experience in office software packages (Word, Power Point) and advance knowledge of spreadsheet (g-sheets & Excel);

  • Experience in use of ERP system is an asset;

  • Experience in use of a TMS is an asset;

  • Experience in payment UAT and PVT is an advantage;

  • Experience with xml is an advantage;

  • Experience in use of Google Suite is an advantage;

  • Experience with JavaScript and Google Apps Script is an advantage;

  • Programming knowledge or willingness to learn is an advantage.

Language:

  • Full working knowledge of English;

  • Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an asset.

Contract type, level and duration - Internship

Contract type: Internship Contract level: N/A Contract duration: 6 months, with possibility of extension maximum up to 12 consecutive months; subject to satisfactory performance and available budget

This internship is not designed to lead to a staff position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.

Interns may be eligible for a monthly stipend from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions. Further, UNOPS may provide a one time travel lumpsum of 500 USD. However, they must make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and necessary visa arrangements.
