This is a UNV National Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Youth contracts.

This assignment is located in the Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (ROMENA) of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), which is part of the United Nations Secretariat and is mandated to promote and protect all human rights established in the UN Charter and in international human rights laws and treaties.

The UN Volunteer will support ROMENA’s Administrative section. He/she will provide ICT and administrative support services and provide daily technical support to users of information management tools and technology infrastructure.

Under the overall guidance of Regional Representative or his/her designated mandated representative(s), and under the direct supervision of the ROMENA Senior Administrative Officer, the National UN Youth Volunteer will:

  1. Support implementation of ICT management systems and strategies, focusing on achievement of the following results: • Compliance with corporate information management and technology standards, guidelines and procedures for the office technology environment. • Provision of inputs to preparation of results-oriented workplans.

  2. Ensure effective functioning of the office hardware and software packages, focusing on the achievement of the following results: • Performance of specific technical functions, including changing of hardware electronic components (network wiring, power sources, etc.) and routine setup, installation and repairs. • Assistance in the installation of commercial and in-house developed software and related upgrades. • Assistance in upgrading patch and anti-virus programs on a timely basis. • Support to users in backing up and restoring their files, as well as in virus detection, removal and prevention.

  3. Support networks administration, focusing on achievement of the following results: • Assistance in trouble-shooting and monitoring of network problems. • Response to user needs and questions regarding network access.

  4. Provide web management services, focusing on achievement of the following results: • Support to the maintenance of the office websites and Intranet. • Coordinate with hosting company for support and trouble shooting.

  5. Provide administrative support, focusing on achievement of the following results: • Maintenance of an up-to-date inventory of software and hardware. • Maintenance of a library of ICT related reference materials. • Maintenance of the inventory and stock of supplies and spare parts in cooperation with the Procurement Unit. • Maintenance of the filing system ensuring safekeeping of confidential materials. • Provision of ICT support to key events, including physical, online or hybrid conferences and seminars. This includes setting up online meetings through Webex, Microsoft teams and sound system at event location. • Coordinate and act as liaison between ICT Helpdesk at OHCHR HQ abroad and ESCWA

  6. Ensure facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing in the office, focusing on achievement of the following results: • Participation and assistance in the organization of training for the staff on ICT issues. • Sound contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice.

IT support and/or web design; • Ability to provide IT support services including IT hardware/ infrastructure support; • Good knowledge of PC/LAN operating systems, Microsoft Windows, , knowledge of web design and maintenance. • Experience working with the UN and or other international development organization is desirable; • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive. • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment; • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines; • Sound security awareness; • Good interpersonal, networking and communication skills; • Willingness to contribute and work as part of a team; • Flexible and open to learning and new experiences; • Respect for diversity and adaptability to other cultures, environments and living conditions; • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded.

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. This position is based in Beirut duty station, Lebanon. National UN Volunteers are part of the malicious insurance plan. National UN Volunteers are expected to be culturally sensitive and adjust to the prevailing culture and traditions.
