Job Description

BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 26 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

SCOPE OF WORK: The Interpreter Services Scheduling Assistant supports a program that works with more than 50 contract interpreters to fill the needs of Charlottesville’s and the surrounding area’s limited English proficiency population and public and private agencies for professional interpretation. The position will work with the online scheduling system, Fluency, provide administrative support to the program, and work closely with the IRC’s pool of interpreters.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Attend a volunteer/intern orientation

•Work as a team with other interns and Interpreter Services Specialist to provide end-to-end interpretation support for IRC staff and customers and their limited-English-proficiency clients

•Monitor Fluency schedule for last-minute appointments and the upcoming weeks

•Correspond with interpreters to assign and reschedule appointments

•Respond to urgent customer and interpreter emails and phone calls, cancel or edit appointments in the system if necessary, and follow up with appropriate interpreter and customer as needed

•Monitor voicemail/phone calls and direct urgent calls to the Interpreter Services Specialist for assistance if necessary

•Assist with evaluating and training new interpreter candidates, including administering language exams

•Record hours and submit completed timesheet for each month via the IRC’s online Volunteer Dashboard

•Complete other projects as assigned

Qualifications

•Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree or recent graduate

•Computer literacy in MS Windows and Office Applications and ability to learn new database system quickly

•Excellent communication skills with fluency in written and spoken English

•Experience working in customer service preferred

This position is unpaid and reports to the Interpreter Services Specialist.
